May be of interest to some on here? Mods feel free to move to another section if more appropriate.

The Canal & River Trust is among the UK’s biggest charities, looking after 2,000 miles of canals, rivers docks and reservoirs; together with museums, archives and the country’s third largest collection of protected historic buildings. As part of our commitment to the long term maintenance and restoration of the waterways, we are looking to recruit a number of Waterway Heritage Trainees across both Wales and England. As a trainee, you will learn specialist skills in both a classroom and practical setting gaining an NVQ Level II in Waterway Heritage Skills along with a knowledge based qualification of the history & construction of canals and waterways. Upon completion, you can look to either further your study, or obtain a career within the heritage sector.

    Benefits of the traineeship:

•The opportunity to work in your local community
•A practical, hands on course with support in English & Maths if required.
•All training and expense costs fully funded.
•Each trainee will be based within a geographic construction team completing a variety of construction style jobs that sit alongside the heritage work undertaken. This could range from towpath work, vegetation management to bankside construction. The whole remit of construction work plays a vital role in the upkeep of our whole network
•Mainly outdoor work in all seasons
•The opportunity to undertake a knowledge based, recognised qualification.
•Great employment and further study opportunities on successful completion of the training.
•Fully funded block release at Heritage Craft Alliance – generally one week per month – accommodation provided.

We have had C&RT's heritage trainees assisting us with the restoration of Lock 15 on the Grantham Canal. Drawn from all the various regions, they are on site for a week at a time. They have provided very useful and welcome support to a unique project which is volunteer led.

Here's a photo of some of them helping GCS volunteers with the first concrete pour at the start of the reconstruction of the lock.

Not sure you should be teaching them how to use concrete, I spent long enough trying to persuade BW engineers that concrete isn't the solution to everything! :D
