Hardly comparing like for like as the A1 was hauling over 100 tons more than the Duchess.

A few shots from today - not a massive success but I was trying some new things - and I have discovered my cameras burst mode isn't actually very quick!!

I've kept the ones where I just missed the duchess as I think they give a sense of speed...

Looks like the perfect sky coming along Dawlish too! Adding to my frustration of not being there

In fairness if you check out my tornado pics on the Torbex thread you can see the light was a bit tough until just before the duchess turned up!!

Great shots Mr K. Interesting to see the difference in the exhaust etc, the Duchess plenty of steam and the safety feathering, Tornado just smoke and nothing at the safety..

So lots of comments like taking Hemerdon to the cleaners. Who's got the speeds?
For a single 9 Coach train the standards the Duchess was shooting at were set by 71000 on 28th May 2007.
Can't count Whiteball Westbound because on that day we blasted through Taunton at 76 and went into Whiteball Tunnel at a mere 68, topping the summit at MP174 at 66.
    The comparable ones are:
    Outward:
for fun, Exminster 76; Dainton will not be a true comparison as we stooped in Newton Abbot; so from a standing start; MP 215 42; 215 3/4 54 (then slipped twice); MP 216 1/4 51; into Dainton Tunnel at 41.2; Newton Abbot 21; Rattery 44.7; Wrangton 50.
    Return:
    MP 241 1/4 65; Hemerdon MP 239 1/4 37; Summit 35.1; Not a true comparison as we drifted through Totnes at 25; MP219 55; Dainton Tunnel In 43.7; Exminster 75.
After Exeter St. Davids Start; Cowley Bridge Jn 37: Stoke Canon LX 51; Hele and Bradnich LX 64; Bridge slacks past Cullompton slowed to 24; Tiverton Parkway 70; MP176 73; MP 175 74; Slipped and lost speed to 68; Summit 68.4; Whiteball tunnel 72.2.

May I apologise profusely to all the professional Knockers on this site for giving so little scope to have a moan about yesterdays run. We already knew about the turntable issues which was why the fence had already been dismantled when we arrived, and yes, it has been replaced. All of the paying punters seemed very happy, the loco ran beautifully, and me and my colleagues had a really good day. Sometimes all the hard work does seem worthwhile. Thank you to all that contributed to the success.
    A la prochaine.

Meanwhile the rest of us just get on enjoying travelling behind steam, diesel on the back or not, and looking forward to your posts telling us as it really is. :)

A big thanks to all who were involved in getting the Duchess to the South West for a cracking run over the hills. The sound on Hemerdon will not be forgotton anytime soon. I'm not sure I've ever heard her sound like that. I Hope you enjoy my coverage.

Good to meet you in the morning at Whiteball.

I later went to Stoneycombe to see (and hear) the Duchess.
    Incline? What incline?

Many thanks to all concerned. <BJ>

    Apology gracefully accepted :)

Congratulations! You set the bar high. A great day for Steam on the mainline.

Mr Man, can I ask if the Duchess slipped on the approach to Ivybridge where I was?? I could hear the loco in the distance then it went quiet and finally rolled passed me before starting to accelerate just after the sation.Just wondered what happened or was there a restriction??
