that's quite logical... 10 to 19 is clearly a set of ten numbers, it makes 0 to 9 make sense.

Southern Railway numbering was somewhat all over the place, but in Maunsell days, they also tended to start numbering sequences (when there weren't other complicating factors) on a "0" rather than a "1", e.g. Lord Nelsons (850 - 865); Schools class (900 - 939); Z class (950 - 957); Q class (530 - 549) etc.

    Bulleid interestingly chose to start his numbering sequences on a "1" (Q1 class C1 - C40; Merchant Navies 21C1 - 21C20 and 35021 - 35030; WC/BB 21C101 - 21C170 and 34071 - 34110. But Bulleid always did do things a bit differently from what had gone before...

I had that impression hence I wasn't sure to mention SR. The LNER systems seem very confusing as well. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LNER_locomotive_numbering_and_classification

Of course ... So why do I recall there being such a fuss over 31400? Was it because it became numerically the first of its (sub) class? .... TOPS Supposedly couldn't cope with that ... ?

I think the point with TOPS vs the BR steam numbering system is that with the former the class starts on '1' while the latter starts with '0'. Thus under TOPS something ending with '0' is part of the preceding number series while with the steam system, something ending '99' is the last in sequence.

It does make me laugh sometimes though. One friend has a habit of referring to 7802 and 7812 as manor number 2 or 12 when of course they are number 3 and 13 in sequence respectively.

I'm assuming this means 43000, or later 41001. The 43000 (and 43001) numbers were when the prototype HST power cars were allocated a place in the carriage number lists, which could cope with a first-of-class number ending with 0 for some reason, and are why the production class 43s start at 43002.

43000/1 are in the carriage series too. They were designated Class 41 when regarded as locos hence 41001/2. Re-designated as multiple unit stock and renumbered W43000/1 and much later came to be regarded as class 43
