The LNERCA is in the final stages of restoring 1950-built Thompson corridor third 1623 and the first seats have gone in today. They are upholstered in newly made replica moquette of the type seen in many period photos. Photos of the first seat to go in can be seen at: https://plus.google.com/u/0/11386395232 ... More news from the LNERCA and NYMR is that it is now hoped that not one but two LNER coaches will make their debuts at the NYMR Autumn Steam Gala and LNER event the following weekend (yes, I am aware that the pernickety among us will point out that its only possible to make a debut once!) as the NYMR Trust Board last night agreed to accept Gresley BTK 3669 on to the railway, following restoration at a farmyard site near Bridlington. Both Thompson TK 1623 and 3669 require a lot of finishing-off but it is hoped that both will be ready in time for the Autumn, making it possible to run a seven coach all-Gresley train, or an 8 coach LNER train with 1623 in painted teak finish.

Would not put any money on either coach being operational at the Autumn Steam Gala, lack of a suitable crane and keeping the operational fleet working has slowed progress. Take a look at unofficial NYMR site for more info.

1623 should carry it's first fare paying passengers since 1968 on Thursday.

As a follow up selection of in this case close up photos showing the brilliant "scumbling" paint work of Dave Simpson of the SRPS based at Bo'ness. I've include a photo of 1623 with Gresley Buffet 641, which highlights the differance 'tween Gresley and Thompson stock. You can see where to a degree the bodyshell design of MK1s comes from in 1623, with it's very similar profile. It may also come as something of a surprise to some [certainly did to me], that they use emulsion based paint to build the layers, they start light then add darker layers. Then once the desired effect has been achieved there are several coats of varnish and the lettering/numbering applied to seal the finish.

Purely a personal view I prefer the wooden body examples although I will say the finish of 1623 is superb

Quite agree, I too prefer the genuine teak version. Though if you're [as the LNERCA is] going to tell the tale of "East Coast group" stock you have to include Thompson stock in the simulated wood finish, as well as pre-LNER stock of which LNERCA have 1 Great Northern [owned by a member] and 2 North Eastern carriages [both in need of overhaul/restoration]. How long the LNER would have continued to paint their coaching stock in this style is impossible to say. Be interesting to see a 125 with Apple Green or Garter Blue power cars and scumble finished MKIIIs between them. Or for that matter a 92 and MKIVs.......

Both types of vehicle are of equal historical value to the NYMR. Congratulations to those hard working volunteers who have put so much effort into getting 1623 into service. Now if only the railway could find some money to get the CL back into service, a rake of Thompson coaches would be a possibility.

Certainly highlights the sea change in coaching stock design from Doncaster. What's more the body profile also shows where some of the body design of MK1s comes from.
