Waste of time and money, there are some in Milton Keynes Centre and I've never seen them used. Most people will be on a day out to visit a preserved railway with a fair distance to travel, would they trust a fancy milk float to get them there, I certainly wouldn't.

OK high speed milk float but this illustrates why electric cars have not caught on, would you pay £34k for a VW Golf? The other thing to remember if you buy used is that the batteries last about 6-8 years and are very expensive to replace. For now I'll stick to diesel.

I have had to take one of these cars for a week. The best bit was finding parking spaces in good places as nobody uses the charging points. The car was fine for getting around the city but I would not want to use one in my normal day job, the current range is not compatible with my needs. My high speed dashes across Europe are not compatible with electric vehicles. Drive 300 miles, wait for a charge then the next 300 miles. No thanks.

Plenty of people pay £31k for a Golf GTi… not as much of a leap as you would imagine.

Shouldn't be pedantic but list price for a 2litre GTi is £27,500 so £6,500 for an electric motor and batteries is excessive. At that sort of money you are well into top of the range BMW and Mercedes small car territory.

I noticed two this afternoon, outside Bury Bolton Street on the East Lancs. a Nissan Leaf was plugged into one of them.

Perhaps we can use these charging points to get some of the NER electric locos running up & down ;-)

Personally I am remaining open minded about this as take up is stronger in urban areas so Heritage railways in those areas may get the demand first. At work (near Heathrow) we have five charging points and have just had to implement a rota so that everyone who wants one gets a charge every day. We have five extra charging points being added this winter and are apparently putting in a planning application for some more as they estimate that there will be over 20 staff with electric cars next year based upon those who have declared that they have cars on order.

  12. This is one of those threads where the poster who went off half-cocked in completely the wrong direction would gain a lot more respect and kudos if they were big enough to hold their hand up and go "Whoops, haha - oh yes. Silly me. Sorry, I got the wrong end of the stick."

Unfortunately it's something that rarely seems to happen on internet forums.
