I seem to recall they are very much the favourite of the esteemed Roger Ford.

The high point of comfort for ordinary second class train travel in UK. Today even the metre gauge trains in Majorca offer better ride and comfort at 100kph in a restricted bodyshell than say Electrostars. I see these are still being churned out over a decade after the first example hit the rails. Cars, coaches, and air have all moved on greatly in that time. Add in customer care such as GTR and rail will start to struggle over the next decade from its current peak if it has not past its peak already.

If anybody can bring off the proposals its the A1 trust, however a couple of questions:-

    1. They want a carriage storage shed in Darlington, together with Engineering base, all great, and I am sure grant funding will sort that quite easily.
    2. Are they going to base the rake in Darlington, and take it to railtour start points from its base??
    3. Same with loco's, because you can see some expense involved with that, and the moves.
    4. If they base the coaching stock etc.., down south (1), may become a bit harder to sell to local authorities.

Wish them all the best, I am sure they can bring this off, I am sure they were quoted £.5m to get North Road signalled onto the network.
The new location must be a better proposition.

If they had been quoted as little as that it would have been done by now.The figure was multiple times half a million.

Was a figure quoted by a senior member of the team, at an open day, a while ago. Maybe 7 years ago, same day as the figure for the boiler was dropped.

Can I just add to Guy's list and ask where the turntable is coming from?

A turntable pit exists on the south side of Darlington station, and alongside it, looking at google earth are various large warehouse buildings.

Although rail connected, I see now obvious way for a rake of coaches to be marshalled into it.

Somebody else may be better able to answer that question.

Interesting post close to it mentions sharing space with Fujitsu, which will have a new turntable on site already.

Mainline connection paid for by somebody else as well.

From one of our European neighbours who were far less destructive of steam age infrastructure than we were ?.

I think the comment to which you refer was a guesstimate which was later nuked when a serious discussion was had.

I suspect the physical work could be done for £0.5 million. The remaining £4.5 million will be the paperwork. :)

All that money for a system that will probably forget you exist at an inappropriate moment....
