I'd also be interested in knowing this. I'd love to pay a visit, but the weathr for tomorrow doesn't look too wonderful. If 53809 or 48624 was rostered for Monday, I'd try to get down then as (currently), it looks to be a drier, brighter day - more conducive to a 250-mile round trip.

The S&D combination of 53809 and 34070 depart Harmans Cross this morning in glorious sunshine!

An impromptu but very good day at the SR today, unfortunately cut short by the poor weather this afternoon. Hopefully I'll do another Swanage gala in the not too distant future, as the intensive timetable is superb - being able to get 4 or 5 shots of each loco while being able to ride on the trains is terrific.

    Thanks to everyone involved today!

'Mastershot' thanks for sharing. Had excellent day at SR on Friday. Andy
Apologies, was 'blown away' by quality of photo! Should have added my sincere thanks to all at the Swanage Railway for their efforts and enthusiasm for making the gala so pleasurable. THANK YOU ALL

It looks like the location known as "Bath Tubs" between New Barn and Herston.

Thanks very much! :) I was very much in two minds about going yesterday - I went down with a cold on Thursday, somehow made it through work on Friday and was umming and ahhing if going to Swanage was a good idea. Judging by the reaction to the photo on here and Facebook/Twitter, I'm rather glad I did go!

Thanks very much! It's Cowpat Crossing, just after Herston. Located on a public footpath, a good friend showed me the way. Worth noting for future visits!

This is not a public location, neither is the footpath which is actually the famers private track. Take your chances with the farmer if you choose to go down there without permission.....

    Video is superb!! Great effort

If it's "Bath Tubs" as suggested by @Paul42 (and it looks very much like it to me) then it is a public footpath, shown as such on the OS map, and with a footpath sign by the A351 to boot!

No it's clearly shown as a path/track on the OS maps not a public right of way. OS maps detail public rights of way as green dashes in various forms (check your legend) this track is marked in black ie not a public right of way. Also see attached images, there is not public footpath sign as you suggest. upload_2016-10-16_21-6-27.png upload_2016-10-16_21-6-43.png

There is a sign by or on the stile which shows it is a footpath. This is the OS map, with the path marked in green dashes.

Gents. There may be some confusion here. There are two crossings between Herston and New Barn. They run roughly parallel from the main road to the railway and cross the railway within a couple of hundred metres of eachother.

    Hope this helps. <BJ>

Yep, Dickers and Cowpat Crossings. I always get these the wrong the way round when asked without my rulebook!

My printed OS map does not show either paths in green!

This is an extract from Council's Definative Map showing the legally defined footpaths in the area. So on the basis of this it is Dickers that is accessible by public footpath and not Cowpat. Unless I have them the wrong way around!

Thanks again to the Swanage Railway for an enjoyable gala. Weather a bit disappointing compared to the Saturday of the Spring gala which was wonderfully sunny in the afternoon. Still worth making the visit - travelled behind two interesting visiting locos and as always, a great home fleet (even without 80104), friendly staff, lovely scenery. What more can one want? Keep it up, chaps!
