The right hand coupling rods have now been replaced, thanks to the EVR operations team who shunted the frames out of the shed so we could have room to work. It all went very sweetly, particularly due to Simon Hunter who machined the gradient pin (which links the two rods together). This had worn distinctly oval and Simon turned it to a true profile and made a new bush to match. The two rods have to be bolted together before they are lifted onto the pins, so this requires a fair degree of co-ordinated manpower. My task was to locate a supply of new imperial 11/16" taper pins, which led to another learning experience: metric taper pins incline at 1 in 50 and are ordered by minimum diameter, imperial pins incline at 1 in 48 and are ordered by maximum diameter. Anyway, I am pleased to recommend Technifast of Northampton; they understood the meaning of "imperial", had the pins in stock and delivered within 24 hours.

Preparation work continues on the boiler; the main steam pipe has been removed into secure storage and Mick is marking and pilot drilling the condemned stays on the inside while new recruit Harry chisels them flush on the outside.

Just back from the Baie Du Somme Gala. One of the guest engines was an Avonside 0-4-0st Fred - sporting plates showing Buxton Lime Firms No.16!

In my absence there had been more progress on The Duke by the 8F crew: the valve chest covers have been machined and new brass bushes made and fitted to take the valve tail rods. At the the other end, the gland bushes have been re-machined or replaced to make a smooth sliding fit on the valve rods. These items are now ready for re-assembly. Work has begun to check the alignment of the slide bars and fit shims as necessary. Work to fit the smokebox floor plates continues.

The new doors on the stores van have had the locking mechanism fitted; the doors are very heavy items with numerous tenon joints which I have not tried to make in more than forty years, so it was a great relief when they fitted first time. This van will need a comprehensive rebuild before very much longer and we need more storage space anyway, so an additional van has been purchased from the old Buxton DMU shed where it had sat out of use since around 1997, but inaccessible until work began to demolish the shed and a temporary road access was built. We got it out just before the shed was flattened and it will be delivered shortly. It too will need much rebuilding but it still carries the remains of the old "Enparts" lettering (and will be restored with the same) and was used to deliver DMU spares, so it should be at home at Wirksworth.

I wonder if anyone can update the above please? I know Elizabeth moved to Rippingale but has been offered for sale again. I've lost contact with the owner so don't know if its sold, moved or scrapped? Any information appreciated.

Thanks Robin, a mate showed me his copy of the telegraph today too. At least its good that Elizabeth is still in one piece. I did try our local industrial museum to bring her back to the South East but they are not looking for anything Standard Gauge.

After a further inspection the old coal bunker has been condemned - much better value to make a new one. Fortunately this coincided with a visit from David Wright who just happened to have an austerity bunker kit in stock; he approved our further preparation work and collected a range of small boiler parts - crown stay slings, palm stays etc for welding up and fettling. I gather the sling stays are completed already.

Simon and Alen returned from a foray to Loughborough with a set of machined piston rings, now ready to fit. Our thanks to the GCR loco dept for their help. Meanwhile Mick has been checking the slidebar alignment, which seems a little peculiar and did not match the cylinder bore centre line. Much headscratching and micrometer work followed; the LH slide bars have been taken down to be shimmed to the proper place and the RH set will follow.
Meanwhile Twiggs have cut out the outline of the main steam pipe in the smoke box floor plate: one more job off the list.

The dome cover, which was in an awful state, has been cleaned down to bare metal and primed. Fortunately the mess was just peeling paint and the metal was perfectly sound. We are now going through the boiler cladding sheets in the same fashion

The sole surviving Grant Ritchie 0-4-0st No 272 of 1894, was steamed & moved under it's own power at Ribble Steam Railway on Saturday 21st May, a few minor items to resolve, but everything else was ok.
This was the first time the loco had moved under steam in just under 50 years.

It looks a bit different to when you and I first saw it in Tommy Muir's old yard up to it's axles in mud nearly 40 yrs ago! Well done to all concerned.
    Cheers,
    Ray.

The crosshead slipper blocks have returned after whitemetalling and machining. Mick and Simon have nearly finished working through the slide bars, with micrometers, skill and extreme patience. Tony has been steadily cleaning and priming cladding sheets - still several to go. The "Buxton Van" which is to be our second stores vehicle has had a few sessions; first job will be to replace the roof, for which the planks have arrived.

Following renewal of the boiler ticket the locomotive left Barrow Hill 19th July on hire to Beamish, for a longer visit this time - probably the rest of this year. This should lead to some marvellous photo opportunities.

Alignment of the slidebars has been completed and they are finally bolted into place. Mick Clarke has put many days of work into this and the total error over the entire assembly is somewhere less than .008", which is .004" for each bar. Alen Grice commented that neither Derby Works nor the manufacturer would have attempted this level of accuracy. The team has moved on to reassembly of the motion and the valve rods and plates have been reassembled in the valve chamber. Simon is machining the crosshead slipper blocks and the rest of us are either cleaning down cladding sheets or working on the roof of the No. 2 van.

Here are 16 photos taken by Les Tindall in 1973 of 15 locos at mainly Lancashire locations including Huncoat and Agecroft power stations and the Yates Duxbury paper mill at Heap Bridge.

All the locos survive except the Huncoat ones (all fireless). I have included photos of three of them in preservation.

For other 1970s industrial photos by Les Tindall see here. (I still have some to process, including about about 50 1973 Scottish photos.)

New piston rings have been fitted to the pistons and the pistons are back in the cylinders. The crosshead slides have been test assembled with the crossheads and dismantled again to have lubrication channels inserted between the top and bottom surfaces. Van No.2 now has a roof which should prove watertight.

The connecting rods have been delivered to Loughborough so that the new big end bearings can be machined to fit under contract by the GCR. The eccentric rods have been fitted and joined to the expansion links; the reversing rod and lever are being prepared for re-fitting. The old floor has been ripped out of No.2 van and the planks for the new floor have arrived. Most of the cladding sheets have been cleaned down and primed and the aim is to get No.2 van sufficiently ready to store them before winter sets in.

Bagnall 2994/401 (Victor) is undergoing rebuilding at SRM at present, except that first of all we have to strip the wheels out and get them re-tyred! This is the only outside gear engine on site, and it is complete with roller bearing motion. The boiler is currently being repaired off site but will be back again shortly. Has anyone any hints and tips on the dismantling of the motion please? Otherwise we will just take great care, lots of notes and photos and hope that our methodology works. I am aware that Vulcan is over at Lakeside and Haverthwaite Railway and has just been restored. Perhaps we should have a trip over there and a long chat. Wikipedia advises that the rollers were in poor condition in 1986, we will have a careful check on them then.

Has someone got his Victor and Vulcan crossed as it appears to be Victor at Lakeside.
