No, you have an underframe. Quite a bit of difference.

it's a start, lets see what he can do with it. I would have thought the obvious thing would be to cast around for a body for it.

The LMS Inspection saloons (this one was burnt out at Chinnor IIRC) had a 50' body which was shorter than most other stock. Only the short Kitchen cars (extinct) and BG's shared this chassis. Finding a suitable LMS body would be unlikely although there might be pre-grouping grounded bodies of roughly similar length. Personally, I would also be concerned that the fire had compromised the structure of the underframe. I admire Stuart's enthusiasm and desire to 'preserve' something but I hope he didn't pay more than scrap value as, I fear, that apart from salvaging a few parts that will be this vehicle's ultimate fate. A shame as several of these these useful saloons have been 'preserved' but the majority are in various states of disuse/dereliction.

Perhaps that shows they're not as useful as thought? I know GWSR put considerable effort j to restoring their LMS saloon for it to sit around not doing an awful lot. It is now at the SVR, sat around, not doing an awful lot, with a leaky roof and a tarpaulin.

There used to be a BG on the NYMR a few years ago, it was declared surplus and put up for disposal.
No one interested in the vehicle as it stood so sold off as an underframe.

Maybe I should have said "potentially useful"? For a small 'out and back' operation they make an ideal propelling control vehicle being already fitted with end windows, brake valve and horn as, in their 'working days', these saloons probably spent nearly half their lives being propelled. These are also ideal for private hire/parties being equipped with tables and a galley. Possibly, and I say possibly, the reason that so many have fallen into disuse is that many were owned by individuals who lacked the finance and/or motivation to carry out the necessary body repairs when the reality of ownership set in.
Bryan, you may remember the LMS BG that came to Steamport with Western Lady? It was also the subject of an arson attack and the body was gutted. Last I heard of it was as a crane runner at Bodmin.
    Cheers,
    Ray.

Not really as a BZ is an LNER-designed six-wheeler!

This burnt ex-saloon chassis was advertised as "free to a good home" wasn't it?

I'm surprised Embsay didn't snap it up for the standard gauge LMS bogies for the NI carriages.

Indeed they are. Spent some of my summers working on one of them, until vintage carriage work was sidelined by work starting on the MK2 rake. I think it was 241.

Only doing "not a lot" because of its condition. The similar SVR based GW vehicles are regularly hired for special parties or walk on cream teas etc.

Reading the latest issue of Steam Railway Mag today I see three Southern Pullman coaches are up for grabs. According to the article the coaches are SECR Pullman coaches built in 1910, 1920 and 1921. I wonder if anyone will take them on. Could look every nice running behind a SECR loco.
