Lightweight Mogul: standard 10 boiler on 4575 chassis. Sort of a GWR equivalent of the Ivatt Mogul. Hopefully lower axle weight than a 2251.

Depends whether it would have had more adhesion weight or just more power. A 2-10-0 chassis under an MN boiler, or even a WC/BB boiler, might have been able to put the power down. Now that's a photoshop picture I'd like to see...

Didn't Swindon want another batch of 28xx 2-8-0s in about 1953/4 ish and BR blocked the request, allocating some 9Fs instead?

There are I believe two 9Fs still in ex-scrapyard condition. Would anyone care to cannibalise one of those and produce a 2-8-2? A 5m wheelbase with no flangeless wheels and around a 17 tonne axle load would go anywhere. You wouldn't get the Bulleid boiler though.

As yet another aside, I read an article in Heritage Railway magazine about F.W.Hawkesworth and, what he failed to pick up on, was that Swindon was struggling, in the early '50's with the increased demand for Heavy, Powerful Express's. In other words, he should have been building more Kings. He would have been aware that upgrading of the track meant that Kings would have been able to reach many more parts of the GWR than before.

To be fair to him didn't he have an idea for a 4-6-2, the so called 'Cathedral'?
