from a business point of view, each loco has to be spotless. Leaving them dirty might please enthusiasts and photographers, but I can just imagine the Tripadviser comments.

Anyone wanting to see it as it was just needs to pay to join the right photo charter. Here in 1965 the driver and guard of a pickup goods, hauled by a work stained Standard 2, chat about the recent death of Sir Winston Churchill (note the newspaper headline). In reality this was in 2014 on the GCR but is as good as you can get, OK for more realism the newspaper should have been the Mirror of the Daily Herald. By Monday morning the loco was in pristine condition again earning its keep on the normal passenger service.

Quite true. Preserved lines have to accept massive compromises whilst offering an "experience" to their customers.

Photo charters and galas are the opportunity to run more realistic trains for the benefit of enthusiasts.

IIRC the owner and support crew left off cleaning for a few days to get the 'weathered look.'

When you spend £200k sometimes you would like the locomotive to stay shiny for a time.......:)

One of my masterpieces that was. Loco is pristine to start, I spend 3 hours or so on it and it ends up like that. A couple of hours washing it off and it's back to normal.

Cheap, easy, and general public see the clean loco they expect when they turn up.

The MHR did a good job of getting their loco's in 1960's condition for the last End of Southern Steam Gala in 2007 by agreeing not to clean them for a while. 73096, 34007, 34016 & 35005 looked suitably work stained (I think 35005 was weathered a little). 41312 was cleaned as she was recreating the last train to Lymington.
The worst weathered livery I have seen was 34027 (running as 34045) at the SVR. She was still in her Hogwarts livery and was plastered with a grey coating of something. It didn't work as she just looked like she had been painted with a bad undercoat which IIRC came off when it rained.

Well, if we're going to pull the picture apart rather than admiring it, footplate crew weren't allowed to wear glasses in steam days. (Perhaps he wasn't footplate crew, though, just dressed like it?!)

Shut up, Steve. If I bothered to read the caption, it says he's the guard! I blame it on the fact I'd just been watching the BBC programme on Kellingley Colliery and was feeling a bit sentimental.
