Fair enough. In post #4, I specifically denied any claim to infallibility! :)

Steve McColl, steam co-ordinator for Network South East.
NSE management also supported the steam operations from Salisbury for quite a few years plus a few main line loco approvals test trips.

Thanks I was trying to remember his name, he seemed to disappear from the scene, I think he resigned from BR soon afterwards

Glad to see yesterday's trip go well, although I don"t count mileage unless convinced diesel not assisting.

Back to 1992 I did one of the Ashfird - Hastings with 75069. There was an additional trip on to London rumoured behind 34027 officially advertised as 'heritage traction (not steam)' or similar, which of course ran with 34027. This was followed by 75069 on 6 coaches. Sir Lamiel preceded both to Hither Green.
At London Bridge 34027's stock was taken out by a diesel allowing 34027 to take the 6 coaches and 75069 out to Hither Green.
After a wait on the station all 3 locos headed the 6 coaches tlo Eastleigh. Lots of startled early commuters and decidedly undark.

Looks suspiciously like the A1 support coach, however, would not expect it.

The PO brake is 35317 which was used last Saturday on the Southend - Salisbury trip. ( About 10 years ago sold by Ian Riley to Eastleigh RPS for use with 850 Lord Nelson.) Seen with 34046 a few times.

Hasn't it been used with 46100 several times? Seem to recall the number.

Not it isn't - it's air-braked only but fitted with a through-pipe to allow it to moved, if necessary, within a vacuum-braked consist. All Mk2s are either air- or vacuum-braked but not dual-braked.

As passenger trains must in single brake mode, ie. vacuum or air, the dual-braked Mk1 support coach has been borrowed for when the Riley 'Black 5s' have been used with the vacuum-only 'Steam Dreams' set.

There are no dual brake Mk2s but some have been through piped of either variety. It emerged during recent investigations that mixed braked rakes were being used, through piped vehicles being unbraked.

Thanks James, I've seen it with a vac braked set so assumed it was dual. 100 lines ' I must not make assumptions'!
Am I also wrong about what I understand to be the situation with Clan Line, engine steam braked tender vacuum but as it is with DBS train will be airbraked?

James beat me to the reply but is much better informed than my own.
As I recall Ian went for air Mk2s in the belief vac braking would become obsolete on the main line. At that time (late 90s) it was envisaged EWS, as was, would be the principal operator.
VT has a rake of vac Mk2s I think?
