I didn't see the programme but 35018 went to Barry. Not 35028, which was purchased directly from BR in 1967. If you saw a Merchant beginning "3502...", it could have been 35022, 35025, 35027 or 35029, all of which went to Woodhams Bros as well.

    Yours to enjoy: http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/p011vfqw/4472-flying-scotsman#group=p01277qd

    Forty minutes well spent.

I also understand the programme on BBC4 on the 29th is due to be transmitted on New Years Day, minus the commentary.

Indeed. Some lovely footage, Alan Pegler seems like a likeable sort and a rather nice elegiac quality to the whole thing.

Some of the aerial footage is quite amazing - the scenery around Peterborough is unrecognisable now. I think it's great the BBC seems to have left this up permanently on iPlayer, and there's a lot in that 'Collection' series that, if you have a 'smart' TV, makes for very entertaining viewing.

The programme was first transmitted on 11/8/1968 on BBC Two at 21:40 -
    http://genome.ch.bbc.co.uk/search/0/20?order=asc&q=4472#search

-and then seemed to be a Christmas staple for a few years!

I met Alan pegler at the ffestiniog in 2007 I think. I was captivated by his charm and upbeat attitude.

I went to a talk by him I think he came across as a quite unassuming type, one of life's gentlemen

I watched the Flying Scotsman a Rail Romance documentary the other day, I always thought he came across as one of life's gents, when Tony Marchington bought 60103 he said one of the first phone calls he got was from Alan Peglar. I think that says a lot about him.

Spent a bit of time with the relevant few minutes and the pause button last night. You can clearly make out 80151, 42765 and 47357, all Barry locomotives.

Adds a sense of hopefulness to it, I think. The documentary's about the sad end of steam and yet a lot of the locomotives shown actually end up with new leases of life.

Amazing how yet, as a child and being interested in trains I never, ever saw it! Well, maybe this year I shall watch it on Christmas Eve; I'll have to get a network connection into my STB though... and luckily, my TV is 4:3 so there'll be no pillarboxing going on!

I watched that Scotsman programme the other day. I think pretty much each of the locos in the scrap line ended up preserved. Is the start of that programme narrated by Fulton Mackay of Porridge fame?

The storage tanks in the opening shot give the location away as Barry. as here

Later the camera passes the Duke IIRC.

The BBC4 Prog aired last night. No comentary, no music, no over exited presenters. just the loco crew going about their jobs. Superb
