Are those periscopes on top of the passenger cars? Should we have some of those over here in GB?

Also, what's the story? What were the circumstances of this run?

It seems that Strasburg quite regularly have interchange traffic with NS but took the opportunity to run a steam powered mixed as opposed to just using a diesel.

Periscopes on top of vehicles in the UK were by no means Unknown. Some of the SR utility vans had them.

I believe those are stove pipes on top of the passenger cars - I think the Strasburg use coal or wood fired stoves for in-car heating rather than steam from the locomotive. Certainly allows more flexibility when running mixed trains!

As did the guards compartments of Bulleid coaches as well as Southern Region Mk 1 coaches - presumably these were instead of the more common side look out duckets that other coaches had.

They were actually expecting 10 cars to be delivered to the interchange, and as 2 locos were in steam, these were used. In fact only 7 cars were delivered, but the tonnage was beyond that of a single loco - particularly their "usual" diesel.

A few years back, they were running "mixed" trains on a regular basis with steam for several months, until deliveries from NS became too eratic.
The photo below shows their diesel on one of the freight workings in the exchange siding at Leaman Place, PA, back in October 2012.

Their main diesel loco is currently out of service (electrical problems, I believe) so they have been running steam freight workings on a number of occasions in the past week or so.
