How many preserved steam locos carry an authentic, original paint job applied by a BR Workshop in the steam age?

Lode Star springs to mind, but I can't think of any other obvious candidates. Many locos were given paint jobs in BR workshops on withdrawal, but most will have been repainted at least once since then.

I'm sure I read somewhere that the paint work was touched up when it went into Think Tank and not 100% original but I might be mistaken but certainly rings a bell in the back of my mind.

Might seem like an odd question, but NSR No.2? From when it was repainted in the 1960s of course! Its paint job certainly looks very old.

Yes, it went through Crewe Works after withdrawal. Can't say whether it has been repainted since, although it is still green. When I saw it a couple of years ago I got the impression that it had been patch-painted. Can't be sure.

Most of the engines in the old York museum were restored by the LNER. Some of them have definitely been repainted. I remember noticing that the original paint tended to "ripple", whereas NRM repaints are very smooth and shiny.

That's what I seem to remember - it had been patched rather than repainted and some of the green didn't match as a result and looked a bit patchy.

The castle Caerphilly? (can't remember for sure) at steam in Swindon is still in authentic paint IIRC.

I can confirm as somebody intimately involved with the move of 46235 from the old MSI into ThinkTank that the paint was not touched at all. All we did was keep it clean and clear of dust etc.

However on the day we moved it, it sat outside TT in the sun and I have a photo that I took and which was sent and published in 'the comic' that clearly showed the fire box wrapper and the boiler barrel were two distinctly shades of green.

I heard subsequently that before the engine was delivered to the care of B'ham City Council that it was housed temporarily at Nuneaton and during that period the shed master decided that the paint on the fire box was a bit tatty. Which may explain the difference.
    Still a genuine paint job.

    Hope this helps.

Adams T3 563's paint work is in a terrible state and cries out for a repaint. I believe it was last painted at Eastleigh in 1948 for the centenary of Waterloo station. Paint decays over time and after nearly 70 years the poor old girl looks very shabby these days. Time to treat her to a new coat in my opinion.

Thanks for this. Good to get an inside view.

Impossible to get decent photos of this loco, but here's a photo of what I understand to be a genuine Crewe cabside paint job.

The same happened to Lode Star when it had its asbestos boiler lagging removed. ISTR that the touching up isn't quite the same colour but that may be my memory playing tricks.

Any idea who did the paint job on NSR 2? Was it a BR workshop?

Has 92220 been repainted since it left Crewe? It probably has but it could be a contender.

Has "Gladstone" been repainted since preservation back in the 1927?

LSWR T3 No. 563 and Terrier 82 appear to have been repainted ca. 1959 - 1960 with the basic finish applied at Eastleigh and the finishing touches done at Clapham - so as to avoid damage during transit - by Eastleigh craftsmen; however, I am not sure if they have had subsequent work done on the paint.

I'm fairly sure the North Staffs livery on NSR 2 was applied by NCB Central Workshops Walkden.
