It will be half term in the south of England ... half term in the north is the following week!

But presumably 60163 won't be running tender-first as it will be under tow at the rear; reference to Waverley Route schedules might be propitious.

That's basically it, steam on the back, tender coupled to train, there is a higher limit although it seems to vary. Similarly steam on the front but tender first being towed, higher than 40...

Not certain about that. I think that Tornado will be at the head of the train on the return but will run tender first. And in answer to @26D_M and his speed limit observation, I think that steam is limited to 45 not 40, tender first. Given that the line limit is 60 mph, that's no great disadvantage especially if the train is timed for that speed.

The planning does not seem to have got as far as updating the timetable/reservation systems. Currently, if you book on the 09.47 from Leeds to Appleby, it says you will get there at 11.37 with no change of trains.

I just hope they put plenty of coaches on. At these prices they could be overwhelmed.

Wouldn't it make more sense to run the train through from Leeds?

I dont know, but wont this be the Leeds-Carlisle(Appleby until March) service anyway ?. I didnt realise there was normally a service that started at Skipton Northbound ("The modified DMU paths on February 14-16 that will be surrendered to steam")(from the Steam Railway article) -

Ah yes, apologies. It was @Phil-d259 who was talking about tender first speeds.

Seems strange starting from Appleby which will involve a lengthy LE move.

presumably will be stabled on the Warcop branch spur? Guess Skipton depot will be occupied with Northern 333's and possibly the 156's that have been displaced for the duration???!!!

Maybe you're right, but strange all the same. Still, one thing, if everything goes to plan and it's a success who knows where it will lead. The S&C is a well known railway and not only in this country. Is it possible that this could blossom into a 'Jacobite' type operation, (says he going into dream mode:)) with steam haulage of a service train during the summer?
Ok, I know, time I was in bed.....to carry on dreaming.

It would be nice to see Hellifield utilised more. You could have regular steam then

I think everyone with an interest in mainline steam will want it to be a resounding success and become an established fixture in the way you describe. Perhaps this is part of the vision for the new build V4?
There is also KWVR on the doorstep and with Tyseley overhauling 45596 plus going for TOC status .......
    Dreamland again!

I guess one of the tipping points was to get Northern Rail on board but you do have to wonder why WCRC hasn't been onto this one before now. I realise that steam on the S&C is not unusual but given the attraction of the line it is surprising that an attempt hasn't been made before to run, say, one service train each way between Carlisle and Hellifield/Skipton with steam. A trial period over the summer months is the obvious time slot. Anyway, I hope that logistically and financially this is a resounding success.

Correct - but in this context that requires a diesel to be coupled ahead of Tornado on one of the legs (Tornado obviously going to be facing boiler first in one direction). Whether the passenger carriages are put between said diesel and Tornado or follow on after Tornado is rather irrelevant..
