Er no actually - 5043 clears on some NR routes where 4965 currently doesn't - that assumes current gauging is to be believed .

You can't make up binary rules for this as obstructions vary as does the widest/highest dimension of each loco type.

It would be good to think that, in time, the WSRA was able to acquire this building & put it back into railway use. OK not one for urgent funding but who knows there may be a bequest or two out there. Might need to wait a while but this should be part of the railway.

Not sure if we've ever got far enough to consider gauging such a thing! I think the largest outside-cylinder GWR loco we have had was 5199, and that was banned through Platform 4/5 at HK (which is quite sharply curved), though allowed through platform 3 (which is straight). To my knowledge, we've never had an outside-cylinder GWR tender engine.

"Computer said no" when it was time to bring a certain Edwardian inside-cylinder 0-6-0 home from London, which caused a degree of angst just to prove that said computer actually had the sunny optimistic outlook of Marvin the paranoid android ...

The original lamps had long gone when the preservationists took over.

At the moment, nothing. It is the track from the crossing into the main platform that has been removed, now the formation underneath is being removed, then drainage will be installed and the whole lot put back.

It had been out of railway use for at least a decade when the preservationists moved in, leased to a commercial company.

There had been a signal box at Watchet until the 1920's. From then, the adjacent signal boxes controlled entry to the single line through Watchet and access to the sidings was by ground frames unlocked by the single line token. One such ground frame can be seen in front of the shed in the 1962 shot.

The cylinders are mounted higher on a Castle and a King than other GWR classes, but Halls have been around quite a bit in the North East, as did a Castle ages ago, which is not known for being generously gauged.
