Noooooo, Eastbourne is far too uptight and it has not got those wonderful net-drying sheds.
Honestly, it is a cultural destination, King Harold and all that. Not to mention the 'twisties' en-route :)

Similar but different to andrewshimmin, Cuba 23rd March 1980 and an Alco 2-8-0 steams across the 350km long A1 Autopista Nacional from Havana to Taguasco - the Cuban equivalent to the M1. No gates or barriers, no flashing lights, no flags, just a Stop sign and a lot of whistling. There was a moderate amount of traffic on the motorway too.

you have just given me an idea, lets take those fishing nets and go biker fishing, see what sort of catch we get :) promise to throw you back afterwards :p or we might knock a few on the head barbeque them on the beach
Now back to things , Someone said the idea was to have a crossing hut that controled northbridge street and the A21, surely the best way would be to have these activated by treadle on the approach the speed limit wont be more than 10 mph i dare say to allow for clear site of crossings prior to crossing them , Junction road could be controled from Bodiam end again with a treadle that activates the warning lights .

I know @Robin White has an interest in detailed implementation of signalling systems, so if she (or anyone else) wants to see how a rail / air crossing might work, see here, starting at 2'45"

I like the visual protection device used to lock the runway out of use while a train is crossing. Sponsorship opportunity available for Brio I'd have thought ...

Regrettably, this very scenic line north from Napier was closed five years ago following severe storm damage. The current government will not pressure the Railways management to fix it as they do not think the rail link is viable. This despite the only main road being unsuitable for heavy freight traffic !

Shall we learn that a density of 200 motorcycles in five minutes (2,400 per hour) is an environmental abomination? Well, we won't learn that because the claim is a gross exaggeration of likely numbers as the writer well knows. And if the crossing is closed for 51 seconds, what is holding up the multitude of motor cyclists for the other 249 seconds? Anybody in Sussex know the prevalence of greasers in those parts?

The Fianarantsoa to Manakara railway in Madagascar still crosses the airport runway at Manakara.

I went to Gisborne whilst the railway was in use but never saw the runway crossing in action. Sadly the line beyond Napier is now mothballed owing to the railway being unable to justify large renewal costs on those magnificent bridges. We were making those mistakes 40 years ago and it is unfortunate that the Kiwis are still veering towards cutback mode.

Re the Ballykelly picture. I don't know if people are aware that the airport control tower was fitted with a set of railway block instruments, connected to the nearest signal boxes - at Limavady Jet and Eglinton. Trains had right of way, except if there was an aircraft emergency, and when the equipment showed "Train in Section" the air traffic people could not allow a landing. I understand the the control tower staff regarded the railway equipment with its bells and plungers, as a bit of a joke.

I ride regularly throughout the year in Sussex on vintage, classic and modern bikes. There are significant numbers of locals but large numbers arrive from other parts when the weather is warmer and especially for runs such as the Ace Cafe Brighton Burn Up.

Surely they can build a ramp on each side of the level crossing? This will aid the motorcyclists and provide entertainment for the waiting car drivers.

You could of course turn the idea around - how fast would a Terrier have to go to jump the A21 with 2 coaches on...?:)

Ok, I'll go and sit down quietly...

But can you imagine the licence fees paid to HIT? Cheaper to build a bridge!
