A variety of laws need to be looked at in relation to driverless cars before than can be rolled out to the public.

Looking forward to it myself, should I last that long. Its the thought that all the other idiots won't be in charge of their vehicles that enthuses me.
And stumble out of bed, crawl in back of car, doze off while car negotiates the traffic and wake up refreshed ready for a day's work appeals to me too...

I've nothing against HS2 in principle, other than what it is likely to cost the taxpayer to bail it out. However, I think there are many better ways to spend that money to improve the life and economy of the North of England than to create an even faster way of getting to and from London.

The towns and cities of Yorkshire are very badly connected. A Manchester-style transit system connecting them together, NOT via Leeds, would be a much better investment.

If you aren't able to control the car, as in being a black cab, why would you?

While I agree that a lot of serious thought needs to go into the implications of driverless cars, such as legal implications, insurance, traffic control, speed limits, etc., I don't think the principle should scare us too much. I am sure they will have a manual override for emergencies or breakdowns. After all, if you've been on a plane any time in the last few years ,you will have been landed by a computer. Many human drivers are very bad at hazard perception, judging their own capability, judging the weather, not to mention (un)common courtesy.

No. If I was drunk and needed a cab home I'd be more than happy to take a driverless cab if it was cheaper than one with a driver. And it will be.

People still keep going on about the speed of getting to/from London as the sole raison d'être of HS2. It is not - it's about capacity. End of. Some may say "why not run freight trains all through the night?" - well, what about the lives and livelihoods of those who work in that sector? Are they to be condemned to eternal night working and not allowed a 'normal' (FSVO) lifestyle just so a few whining NIMBYs can bang on endlessly about how lovely the Chilterns are? And wouldn't an eight-lane motorway through the Chilterns have far more of an impact?

As for driverless cars: would love one, so I can get some kip on my journeys to/from my current workplace - (up to) two hour commutes each way with a twelve hour shift in between are harder to do than when I was twenty years younger - especially as I now drive that journey. I have some years before I can draw my pension, so...

That's not the primary market, initially at least. It'll be the likes of Uber and Amazon that'll be all over driverless at the beginning.

There's already a Motorway, M40 and the Chilterns are an area of outstanding natural beauty. Freight trains do run through the night on the WCML. What is your obsession with the Chilterns, I think you will find the good folk of Brackley Helmdon and other Northants villages are equally as worried. I can and do us ethe M40, I'm sure the number of NIMBYs as you call them far outnumber those who will be able to afford the rail fares.

Because the inhabitants of the Chilterns are by far the most vocal about this.
