The Medway Valley line would be good, as running round at Strood and Tonbridge shouldn't be a problem. The big problem is gauging. When some Tonbridge-Maidstone West shuttles were operated in 1999 and 2000, I recall that Bodmin (the loco used in 2000) wouldn't fit through the short tunnel north of Maidstone West station. This means that options for motive power would be very limited. 76084 or 9466 are the only potential engines that spring to mind, given that the Tyseley panniers don't travel that far from their West Midlands base. The route is reasonably level so even a small engine could manage a decent length train (although platform length might be an issue) and the scenery, at least south of Maidstone, is quite pleasant.

A nice idea. Hard to see anyone running with it, but you can never say never.........

Bear in mind that mine was a response to a suggestion of the distinctly non-mainline registered O1...

True, but if your dream of SER No 65 + compartment coaches turned into a BR (W) Pannier tank + Mk 1 (or even Mk II stock), I for one would not complain!

We can all make suggestions based on our favourite local lines, but are they practical? I think Whitby-Battersby would be and there's servicing facilities to hand at Grosmont, not to mention a stable of main line registered engines, but perhaps it would be better to stretch a little further and use the B1 and K1 on the Newcastle-Middlesbrough coastal route?

I'd love to see a repeat of the 4MT Tank hauled services on the S&C. Would either Forster Square - Garsdale or Skipton - Garsdale be viable? Not sure if there's still a crossover at Garsdale these days...

(Sorry for keeping this off the subject of Tornado - splitting the thread might be advisable)

The NYMR already do run to Battersby, namely non stop running on special events. Whether this was used to replace the unit service that runs would be interesting, as it could boost numbers if done and advertised in advance. Its probably the most likely event that could be done, by using nearby Heritage stock to augment or replace the service.

As for routes that are in the north east that can be done - the Durham coast is a no starter. Steam is banned from Ryhope Grange, due to the Metro wires, as far as Pelaw (I think).

The one that stands out to me would be Newcastle to Carlisle. You can turn at Carlisle using the triangles and service like tours would do. The run to Newcastle would see the train turn on the bridges and allow it to turn back with relative ease, paths on the line I expect would be able to be found and I'm not sure if the run to Newcastle and back would need water stops. If so, I would also think that this could be done with a longer stop at somewhere like Haltwhistle, so as not to impede on the services terminating at Hexham. If it were to be a DBC operation again, Tyne Yard has the ability to service both stock and engines and is not far at all from Newcastle. But if you were looking for somewhere to do something like this again - Newcastle to Carlisle to me is the easiest and obvious one to go for.

Plenty of Chimney pots about, half term, should be a winner.

And from a technical point of view, plenty of servicing opportunities, and easy access either end via ECML or WCML.

I thought the discussion was about using steam on timetabled trains. That should mean existing paths and not finding new ones. Are the times achievable? Steam would have to fill a diagram, even if it required more than one loco, otherwise the normal stock would be in the wrong place to take up the working. Is water available at a sufficient supply rate to fill a tender reasonably quickly?

A steam engine working with stock would not be able to keep to times of a unit. Theres the whole aspect of dwell times at stations would be longer as people got on and off. Then the locking doors, checking, which takes longer per stop than using a unit. Acceleration and speeds would be different and I think a steam engine would not match.

Tornados run this week was with an adapted timetable. The southbound run was at 45mph as it was going tender first and pulling away from Kirby Stephen, 67029 gave the A1 a nice push to get the train started. Even if the locomotive was smokebox first on a tyne valley service, calling at all stations or even on the semi-fast service would see it loose time overall.

As a result, your steam engine can replace a service so long as diagrams and timings are found or adapted to suit. The Tyne Valley service does stable at Carlisle for some time which would probably be long enough to service. This steam service would be an excellent way of launching the new Northern Rail Connect service which does feature a faster more direct Newcastle to Carlisle service that is extended to Middlesbrough, with steam doing the section for the Tyne Valley.

    Continuing the thread drift...

Scarborough - Bridlington, and if the LSWR mainline through Okehampton is rebuilt, Exeter - Okehampton -Plymouth - Dawlish- Exeter would be a good loop.

Even further fame and fortune awaits 60163 as her starring role in the new Paddington Film has partly been revealed in the new Film Trailer released today. Crab 13065 also features:

Paddington 2 also has a major article in the November issue of Empire magazine with a picture of 60163. 60163 features in an epic train chase sequence which forms the climax of the film. The first Paddington film was a big success so a lot of people around the world will be seeing 60163 on the big screen.
Here are some screen grabs from the trailer:

Apparently this was the reason Tornado ended up on a low-loader - it was mentioned at the Convention on Saturday.

The Tornado head board seems to be new unless it's a CGI creation. More good publicity for the loco and A1 Trust.

There's also some news in the new issue of Steam Railway about the the A1 Trust making plans for its new Shed, Workshop and Carriage Shed on the site of the 1861 Stockton and Darlington shed.
