Now we know why some enthusiasts refer to diesel locomotives as "boxes".

Ironic that it has grills over the windscreen - something about people in glasshouses perhaps ...

To clarify, one Class 21, D6109, was repainted into BR Blue with full yellow ends and headcodes. Close ups of photos clarify its MAN exhaust. As delivered all over green with red buffer beams should be a good start.

Interesting website. I wasn't aware that the boiler (steam heat presumably) had been manufactured by GEC along with the electrical equipment.

Incidentally how similar mechanically and electrically is the GEC WT880 with the WT981?

Rather puzzled as to why some locos would have been based at Ipswich (32B) to work freights to the Isle of Grain in deepest Kent as well......

I've seen a few references to them as Baby Warships, this seems to be a recent thing though.

Only the hydraulic ones could fairly be thus named, not the D61XX versions.

Some were certainly shedded at Ipswich to start with but like you I'm puzzled with the reference to Isle of Grain workings.

Thanks for pointing out my lack of geographical knowledge of East Anglia & Kent, chaps. I stand corrected, pic was Fison's in Ipswich, not Isle of Grain, which is new to me. Locos went to Ripple Lane also, unsure would they have been used to Tilbury region? I'd heard of a Janet from Isle of Thanet but didn't realise the rich history of the region! There's quite a surprising amount of interest from the region on website hits, & am learning a bit more about the region, obviously some there remember them. Yes they were as reliable as many British cars, but we love 'em anyway! The typo re the boiler will be corrected, it seems to have compacted some writing & is 'stuck' sadly the high heeled shoes have gone. The best/safest generator/alternator will have to be used, sorry can't comment further until the design is settled, aspiration vs realism. Look back in 12months.

The best thing about the D61xx class IMO, was that their raging success on Glasgow - Aberdeen passenger workings, gave many A4's an extended life north of the border ;)

Gosh, if you're considering an Alternator in place of the generator you are really pushing the boundaries in terms of engineering re-design. That said, given the task facing you, the additional effort of changing the control system to accommodate an alternator set up may not be so great, though it will be interesting to see how you package the converter and its cooling, unless you are also going for AC traction motors, though that is surely a step too far even for this ambitious project. Are you planning to use solid state electronics in place of the electro-mechanical devices in the 61XX and class 27? Have you secured the services of an independent engineer to oversee the vehicle acceptance?

Changing tack slightly if you start with bogies and chassis from a class 27, is it your assumption that "grandfather" rights over the various applicable regulations regarding locomotives (everything from crashworthiness to emissions) will be avoided? I wonder how much of the original has to be present to enable the avoidance of these rules.

Where are you intending to carry out all this conversion work and when will you be moving the 27 there?

Well frame drawings have amazingly turned up. Maybe D6158 will keep 60009 out for longer on those failures?

Well as no one wanted this 27007 has gone. Fortunately there was just one option to preserve it, I didn't have the heart anyway.
Hope it wasn't project 22 fans heckling as they have predictably gone, their website. However, at the present time (March/April 2017) we are experiencing a few issues within the committee due to commitments, unfortunately we haven’t been able to attract the people we need to open up more aspects of the build project. With key members have significant time constraints preventing them from carrying out some functions. The Committee is determined to do it’s best, with the resources it has, but delays are likely to continue until we can reform and restructure, however this does not detract from what our aims and goals are Please accept our apologies – we appreciate your patience and goodwill during this time.
    So enjoy the container!
