I don't think anyone will disagree that, of the big 4 railway companies, the LNER was the best at running a museum.

I would hope not. They saved some extraordinary exhibits pre-formation of the national collection. The LNER also ran a few of them (Stirling single, 251, 990).

For a GW supporter, it's a bit like the pot calling the kettle black. By the late 1940's, most GW locos were generally museum pieces in their design, if not build.

While I'll admit to a little subtle irony in the phrasing, nevertheless we do all owe a genuine dept of gratitude to the LNER directors of the time and their vision. Was that the very start of the commercial heritage industry?

Especially considering that LNER finances were usually in a pretty parlous state throughout its existence.

...as were most steam locos. I just read a bit about an Aussie class of EE diesels introduced in 1951, alongside American locos of similar capacity, years ahead of the UK.

If profitable running your own tourist attraction is a win/win, since fare income increases as well.

Has Galatea had an overhaul? I know its ticket was up this year or next but it seems strange to me if it is on a test run despite only having a year or less on its ticket.

Beat me to it, not sure if its been an overhaul or just an extended winter maintenance job? Was the ticket up, I know that 46115 was due an overhaul and I remember seeing her freshly painted after restoration at the Carnforth open day in 2008 (god was it 11 years ago!) and Galatea was way off being finished then?

Re-tube to extend the mainline boiler ticket I believe. 45699 has been in ticket for about 6 years now. I think to get beyond 7, a re-tube is needed?
