She does look good in black, I kinda hope they keep her in that livery.

Also that the 76xxx is a 2-6-0 they have printed that its a 4-6-0 ;) i notice that 18 isnt fully finished either, theres still the marker lights to fit, with the increased electronics now fitted to mainline steam engines,on 35018 do they still use the buffer mounted battery box or are the batteries now to large to fit in there?

I would imagine that modern batteries would give a much better power output for the same 'volume'.

possibly, plus you have the stones steam generator also, which would power lights etc when in use, that could also charge up the batteries if its of high enough wattage

Plus looking at the footplate photo, is she going to be battery powered?

And the piece incorrectly says that 35028, the last of the class to be rebuilt, wasn' t rebuilt until 1960. The correct date was October 1959.

All the same, and regardless of which livery she finally appears in, It's great that 35018 is so close to completion. I've always had a soft spot for this particular MN since a visit to Barry in 1974 (see image below) when she was the most easily photographable member of the class in Dai Woodham's yard. It has been a very long wait but I'm glad it won't be much longer.

Well, I for one as a Southerner won't be put off either photographing 35018 or travelling behind it in black if that turns out to be the final colour, although the more authentic green would be preferable.

If anyone actually bothers to read the article it says, 'it has been outshopped in black livery, but 35018 maybe repainted once tests, proving runs and certification are complete'.
Knowing Carnforth though the more hot air it creates on here the less likely they are to buy some green paint...
I look forward to a run behind it, it's nearly 20 years since I had a MN on the mainline. 35005 to Blackpool, we clocked 84mph on the return through Wigan as we tried to claw back a late departure. Superb locomotive and it looked awesome in..... Blue.

I loved 35005 in BR Blue though I don't think I got see to her like that but I did have the Hornby version.

Although I'd like to see 35018 in BR Green with early crests, I think she'd look good in Lined Black and looking forward to another new Merchant in steam (and when 35028 returns we'll have 3 Merchants in steam since the end of steam).

Precisely. People just don't know when to give things a rest and let nature take its course. If its black, its black, if its blue, its..., well, you get the picture!

Any colour will do. I'm looking forward to seeing it thundering down the LSWR mainline at some point.

Instead of moaning about the colour, shouldn't we be saying thank you for stumping up the cash for returning something to steam? I've mentioned this before but if I was WCRC's owner I'd be mightly p*#%$~d off that some on here can only criticise that it's not the 'right' colour, grow up some of you, and bite your bloody tongues! I know what I'd be doing if I was in charge at 10A right now and it would involve getting on the phone and ordering 10 gallon of Porterbrook Purple!

Well, after all those years of it being part-restored and then looking like it might be returning to nature like 35025, I'm glad to see 35018 looking substantially complete and ready to go. I quite like the no-number-plate look, I think 35008 ran that way in later days.

Did anyone else spot the description of the Mid Hants as 'the route from Basingstoke to Winchester' in the article?

You could have travelled by train from Basingstoke to Winchester via the Mid Hants at one time ... Might have been delayed at Buggleskelly on the way though :)
