sand boxes are different also, but the giveaway is the pipework on the left side, i believe the hand rails may be different also, so does anyone know why the changes were made on the next MN to be rebuilt? for instance, why the bend on the pipework was moved further foreward, and why 35018 wasnt then changed to how the rest of the class was then outshopped .

Easier to crank a pipe near the end than in the middle? Presumably it was retained as it wasn't a critical difference, although wonder how many boiler overhauls took place before withdrawal?

I'd actually be impressed, if just to be different / accurate (depending on your thinking) it was to carry its TOPS number, rather than 35018. Somehow don't think that would happen though...

Peter Smith's books give an LMS mans point of view here and he thought that GWR Halls were simply fantastic at lifting trains past Branksome in stark contrast to the Bulleid's slithering there way past. Maybe an impartial view will show that you aren't correct

Maybe it would show that they all had strengths and weaknesses?
There were few truly poor designs that reached service.

I didn't say they were poor, I was rubbishing the claim that all the Bulleids were better than all GWR locos.

It has been noted that the S&D pacifics were sometimes the poor relations of the fleet (I believe that 34043 was considered particularly unreliable), so that may have tainted the LMS driver's opinion.

News to me... I always thought that S&D pacifics were well recieved. Ravens first was on a part with the Gresley A1 and eventually you would have A1, A2, A3 and A4. Theres some gorgeous photos of them on diversions to Shildon, Bishop Auckland area on original S&D territory...

    Meanwhile... back to 35018.

Any idea what the nameplate colour will be. Its just that I'm in the planning stages of a project. I would anticipate that the nameplate is black too.
