Mick has made a very neat job of the sanding gear drive cranks; Messrs Twiggs supplied the steel bar for the links and only finishing work remains. Overhaul of the cab fittings continues, as does cleaning and painting of pipework.

Photographs from Loughborough indicate that the firebox is undergoing some intensive surgery, among other things the new copper tubeplate is being marked and drilled ready for forming.

Back at base we are running an obstacle course to get at the locomotive while the new shed floor gets concreted - the pour starts next week. Simon was seen going over the combined brake valve with a micrometer and a serious expression; valve parts which should have had a 5 thou clearance and a smooth sliding fit were more like 50 thou and a sloppy rattle. Comment from someone who once drove it "it always seemed to blow through a bit"; I bet it did! Fortunately we have been loaned a set of drawings and Simon is making new parts. Other bits are being cleaned up and painted as appropriate.

The boiler of Hunslet 3839 "Wimblebury" passed its hydraulic and out of frame steam test today at Foxfield. A crane lift is planned shortly to return the boiler to the frames. IMG_20170317_153642.jpg

Lots of crane activity at Foxfield today - reassembly of 'Wimblebury' , 'Florence No.2's boiler lifted and 'Ackton Hall No.3' dismantled

LMS at Loughborough have been busy with our boiler and we called in to talk to David Wright and view progress last Saturday. They have got their new and very large workshop organised to their liking and there are about 10 boilers in for repair. It makes a world of difference when boiler repairs are dealt with by a specialist firm whose ordinary everyday business is to execute such work in bulk. A new “tombstone plate” has been made for the firebox throatplate and welded into place. It looks a bit like an ornate memorial, hence the name. The lower outer firebox sides have been cut away and the new copper tubeplate is being machined.

It isn’t all good news. Thorough NDT examination revealed plenty of minor cracks in the firebox crown which have been ground out and welded up. Serious cracks were found in the foundation ring and backhead and we have decided to have these items replaced. The price quoted for the new backhead, which is the entire back end of the boiler, was surprisingly reasonable. LMS reckon the boiler work should be completed in the Autumn.

While we were there David showed us a locomotive backplate he had already taken out; it had wide, deep cracks running vertically between stay holes for just about the full height of the backhead, what should have been half inch plate had an effective thickness of no more than 2 to 3 mm. I expect that more and more problems like this will be detected as boilers age.

    Hunslet 3193

Due to the extended period of dry weather, progress on Hunslet 3193 continues seriously well. Since the last update the boiler (having had its hydraulic and first steam test) is back in the frames, the cab roof and sides are on and the boiler has been lagged and re-united with its cladding. Paint is going on like its going out of fashion, the boiler barrel and firebox surround are both painted up to gloss and are ready for the saddle tank to be craned back on - all being well that should happen in the next couple of weeks.

Eustace Forth (above) has had the tank and cab lifted back onto the boiler and is in the home stretch to return to steam this year along with Wimblebury (below) which also had the tank and cab put back on and is undergoing a repaint alongside the final works to return to steam.

I went to the Dean Forest on Wednesday (April 12th) and was pleased to find Rennes RSH7139 working the trains. Boy does it have a great front end! Excellent valve settings and some sprightly start ups. Apparently it has the boiler from Sapper in it for the next five years whilst it's own gets repaired. The original boiler was lit up at Mountain Ash without water in it and had lots of star cracking around the stay holes. The firebox is removed as is it's backhead.

The boiler from Wilbert HE 3806 is away for patches to be let into the outer firebox.
Recently arrived is Hunslet 50550 class Gunby HE2413, sister loco HE2411 is also at the railway.

A thoroughly enjoyable visit and the catering at the Dean Forest is superb compared to other railways.

A gala is planed for May with three austerities Rennes with Sapper and Swiftsure.

Interesting, thanks. We had Gunby on the Gwili in the mid-90's but didn't manage to get it going. As I recall the boiler is non-standard (sorry can't be any more technical than that..). Since leaving West Wales it has been at the Swindon and Cricklade I believe.

    Regards

    Matt

Think the one from either HE3889 NCB 65 or Swiftsure.

The boiler swaps on the austerities are rather difficult to keep up with!

Although there are lots of similarities Gunby is a Hunslet 50550 class, from which the Austerity was developed.

A third 50550 is at Embsay, formerly of Ackton Hall Colliery, since named Spitfire which was a Bickershaw Austerity!!!
