No problems at all. Quite severe restrictions on the line account for the speed. Locos were firmly in control all day.

A great day out today. No complaints at all. Even the Whitby fish and chips were brilliant.

Of course Al, but I certainly didn't infer any problems, I was answering previous comments about the loco handling at a particular place, perhaps one of the speed restrictions that you mentioned.

    Cheers,

    Alan

Well that's my idea of one kind of good day out with steam. Leave the house at 7 for an hour's journey to York and get back soon after 9. Three hours plus at a destination with lots of places to eat and things to do and weather in merciful mood. I must say Whitby was extremely busy.

Train full, except possibly the standard brake. Excellent company.

Not a day for loco performance. There were some slacks and restrictions on the hill up to Nunthorpe as can be seen from the vid at Gipsy Lane. Going up past Great Ayton on the way out and coming back from Grosmont up to Glaisdale and Battersby, 76084 had a good test and I'm confident she can handle the hills between Sheringham and Cromer.

If anyone reads this stuff, the one comment I'd offer is that scheduling 20 mins from Whitby to Grosmont coming back with a need to collect token and then a dead stop to observe at Ruswarp was asking the impossible. The NYMR schedule says 25-30. But that's a detail, thanks to all including the photters.

Just a trivial comment, maybe, but the positioning to get the tree in frame actually makes this a rather nice shot.

Don't knock it. That train was the only way for me to get to the Flyer at Northallerton!

Glad you enjoyed the day. Even the standard brake was full, it being filled on the basis of four available compartment being the norm. As it happened this was a five compartment brake but better to under sell than over sell.

Your comments on the return schedule are very true but overlook the fact that, as is so often the case on all these trips, there has to be a large element of compromise in the planning. We could not leave Whitby before 16.30 when the preceeding train had cleared Glaisdale. Then we had to be at Nunthorpe to cross another service there and be in York before the ECML was closed for engineering works. If we had had the railway to ourselves we could have had an easier schedule but in the event it seemed to work pretty well.

Lets hope we can do it again sometime.

Thanks Peter-- yes I should have looked at the preceding departure!

I was aware of the blockade at Thirsk. Looking at RTT it was all a bit tight so well done all round!

And here was us saying we didn't see anyone join the train at Northallerton! I'd have said hello if I known you were there, Al. Had a word with at least one NP member who was on the train, although I have known him for years before NP (yes, there was life before NP!)

Rather surprised at the comparative lack of 'watchers' too - some disappointment at All Saints Church tonight that it hadn't been known about by more people in advance or there would have been at least one more - best placed member of the congregation was the chap who lives in the apartments next to the station who could watch everything from his window!

I reckon about a dozen or so joined at Northallerton. And it was also a close thing coming home. I was banking on the charter staying ahead of the Middlesborough to Manchester Airport service, which it did. But when I got off at Northallerton on the way back I saw the lights of the Newcastle to Liverpool service waiting back up the line and jumped on that down to York. As it turned out the charter caused all manner of difficulties for the Man Airport train that was stuck behind on the slow and arrived at York well after I was on my way back to London.

If Rob Tibbits, the train manager is reading this, he will now know that all went well. The things you do to get decent steam. Station to station, that was a 19 hour day but worth every moment!
