Exactly the same as a top tapered boiler but with the advantages over it of both a reduction in weight of water and greater steam space. A Bulleid design feature seldom appreciated.

Also makes it easier to get at the middle engine for oiling!

The Merchant Navy names are really quite confusing at one level as many of them became just subsidiaries of others. For example Cunard owned shares in Brocklebank Line from between the Wars and Cunard-Brocklebank officially formed in the 1960s. By contrast, Royal Mail Lines just progressively disappeared as an entity after it was bought by Furness, Withy in the 1960s. Given the name and the feats of speed performed by 35003 - namely 106 at Fleet - it is a pity that this one didn't survive as it was also a good 'un.

Likewise 'British India Line' was a subsidiary of 'P&O' from 1914 onwards.

One thing that I have wondered has anyone put a list together of what each Merchant Navy would have probably been called if they were named after battles like they were originally. I know 21c1 was going to be named after the battle of the river plate.

I don't believe that this idea got any further than just that - an idea. 21C1 was tried with the name 'The Plate' after the Graf Spee was sunk in that river but I'm pretty certain that a provisional list was not produced partly because the number of WW2 allied victories was not particularly easy to identify; well not thirty of them.

I guess that what makes the class names unusual is that the nameplates were all 'sided' so that the flag within the roundel would be flying in the correct way for forward motion of the locomotive. I guess there may be other examples of left and right plates but as a whole class, I think the MNs are unique.

If one of the locomotives was going to be called Battle of Britain that could get very confusing.

Do you know something we don't? "Nudge, nudge say no more".

35028 could only be available for the MHR for the first weekend of July as she is involved in the Bournemouth Belle on the 5th July and The Waterloo Sunset on the 9th (which I am booked on). It would be great if she did appear at the MHR event alongside the other Bulleids. This would top the great gathering of A4's at York for me!

The last time I checked, she was also booked for the Pullman train on the 1st July so wouldn't be able to turn up at the MHR... unless plans have changed!

Nope - just wishful thinking on my part, knowing how they were blown away with the reception they received & the fact they want to come back - one can dream can't they?.........

I hope that they do come back one day, perhaps when 35005 returns from overhaul The Gala featuring 35028 was one of the best yet. I could only attend for one day
So a return visit from Clan Line would be very welcome!

they could always do a midweek railtour starting from Alresford, the DBC stock is based at Eastleigh so Clan Line can always run down light engine to Guildford, then tender first to Alresford so its in the right place, Alresford to Guildford to Fratton, then onwards to Salisbury it can turn at Salisbury if the 67 stays on the back the whole train turns, then it can return the same route, 67 takes the ECS back to Eastleigh , 35028 can then spend the week end on MHR and return light too SL on the monday

I was at Tyseley this week and I'm sure I saw some bullied frames and wheels. Any idea which one it was?
