I suspect that many didn't survive because at the time, they were seen as having no revenue earning potential, and were still modern and boring. I would agree, it is a huge gap in the scene that we regrett in hind sight. Glad someone has managed to persuade a railway that its a worth while asset to have. Good luck with it boys and girls.

Hi RVP, First let me wish you every success with 'Project X'.
I'm new to this forum, coming across it when seaching for details on Diesel Brake Tenders.
From the information I have sofar, I'm suprised that you have decided to introduce a new catagory, (1/559).
The existing catagory 1/557 was based on the BR Mk1 coach using BR1B bogies; only 2 built by Standard Wagon Co., running Nos: DB964029/30. As you are using the BR Mk1 coach as the doner, would it not be appropriate to use this existing classification?
    Regards, Bruce.

Next project is a former Steam loco tender converted to carry Heavy Oil and a replica fueling point for oil fired locos complete with stationery boiler to heat the oil , using the spare Dean Goods boiler thats kicking around..

Amazing that they have managed to raise money for this, a period in BR history best forgotten. What other railway in the world would expend locomotive power shoving damn great lumps of concrete around?

You do realise your argument blows demonstration freights out the water too ?, There's more to pres rolling stock than MK1's.

There's plenty BR did where you wonder why - in this case, why they didn't just bite the bullet and eliminate unbraked goods. However, these were a feature of their day, and it's good to see a small group do something a little bit different.

Most demonstration freight trains use two brake vans to stop all the movement of the brake van from one end of the train to the other to save the time of moving the brake van form one end to the other, so the brake tender will add a lot of shunting time with just one engine , or two engines to do the shunting to get this brake tender to the other end of the train, and unless the train has only one brake van it will look even more odd with engine, brake tender, wagons and the other brake van.

Don't think it will; brake tenders ran either in front of or behind the train engine.

I can't see the point of this project, but it's not my money.

How many of us on here ever saw a brake tender in use?

As far as I'm aware they weren't used in the South Wales Valleys, where class 37 were originally used for their higher braking power than a Hymek. If they weren't needed there, why would they be needed in flatter areas?

I never saw a lot of things in service, including the majority of preserved lines and all preserved steam, because I was born after they'd been closed/withdrawn. That's even more the case for my kids.

Various possible reasons; it could be that the MDV 21t mineral wagons (vac braked) were in use, it could have been that the region preferred to stick with pinning wagon brakes down (the use of a brake tender was supposed to reduce this requirement).

But your effectively saying carting a diesel brake tender about is wasting fuel on moving non profit making trains around, Isn't that what a 9F on a goods is ?, Fortunately there's a little room in pres for such nicities alongside making money rather than losing them to the pages of history,

No point in using that TPO pick up gear at Quorn as well is there? It's not a REAL mail train is it?

I;ve edited my post, I didn't intend to infer what you read into it. It was a genuine ask as to how many of us saw them in service (I didn't)
