The 40 is out with the 'Crab' so worth the effort, especially as the sun is due to shine! I'll be climbing the step for the first trains out and the 40's 1st trip back. Probably move on to Irwell Vale/Ewood Bridge later, via a chippy in Rammy :)

Just checked on 'sun calc' and the light is on the west side, just, at the top of THE steps for 106's first southbound.

Ahh yes 25057, the Sulzer type 2 that refuses to be underlined in my book, past couple of times I've headed over to Sheringham for it, it seems to hear I'm on the way and throws it's toys out the pram!

I'm sure the good folk over at wnxx could answer the questions but it has been good to see a civilised discussion on here with those who hate 'boxes' not disrupting it.

I think 47004 may have worked one of the last steam heated trains in Scotland in about 1984/85? Think it may have been a Footex if that's any good.

Never made it to the 'steps' John, got stuck in two miles of traffic so did an 'about turn' and went to Ewood Bridge (where the 8F was a surprise) and caught the 40 having it's water tank topped up at Rawtenstall. n1.jpg n2.jpg

The 'steps' were quite busy for the 40 and the shots you have there are are perfect for the OP!

Well, pictures of how it's done for the OP - in preservation at least - and I get to remember chasing after 40 106 that snowy night. Fantastic! Well done, all! All I have to do now is imagine it pulling a rake of GUVs/BGs in deep snow in 1979 and I'm away to a much happier time :)

Whew:) Finally got back on Nat. Pres. After several attempts, managed to get my password reset. Would like to comment I am most interested in Britain's stellar steam collection but just as here in USA the early diesels are just as interesting and deserve preservation. We have diesels here that are older than many of the few current mainline capable operating steam locos. Shamefully we let the one last pair of Alco PA passenger locomotives escape to Mexico where they suffered much abuse before being brought back here by Doyle McCormick who is attempting to restore one of them. The second one I think will be cosmetically restored but never run again. I do not know if they still have their steam generators but if not, an original would be quite impossible to find.
I am a big fan of your Deltics. Fast & powerful! Were the 40's the next generation past the Deltics? They do have Deltic similarities.

The Deltics and the '40s' were both built by the English Electric Co. The prototype Deltic was built in 1955 and the production Deltics were introduced in 1961. The '40s' were introduced in 1958.

The 40's were not exactly fast compared to a Deltic @R.W. Grant The Deltic was a Racehorse (as several of them were named after) in the nicest possible way ( I'm partial to a 40) they were a lumbering workhorse. Although not the most sexy of machines, if your into EE stuff check out the workhorses at the top. On the left the EE type one (class 20) on the right the EE type 3 (class 37) the 20's sound very much like a 40 even though they have a smaller power unit and the 37's are a bit like a small 40 although they certainly don't sound like one!
