Its probably a reasonable bet that the influence of the Kremlin on Eastleigh in the early part of 1948 did not turn SR working practices upside down.

Quick correction, Julian. Five Adams locos survive. There are also two B4 0-4-0 tanks - 96 Normandy at the Bluebell and 102 at Bressingham.

I see that the Swanage Railway have put an advert in the latest Railway Magazine indicating that there is a vacancy for a Museum Manager.

    Thank you for the history.

This rather supports my earlier point that work to bring 563 back to life is unlikely to be at the expense of vital 'heritage'.

Sometimes I find it better to stay out of the discussion for a while if I feel hot under the collar. I sense no hysteria just polite concern for the most part, and a little disagreement.

I also sense a minor PR gaffe by the NRM (and I mean minor, not on Kendall Jenner/Pepsi proportions by any means) in the timing of this announcement. If the NRM could have waited until Swanage were ready to announce their own intentions for the loco in just a little more detail then maybe we'd all be happier.

It would certainly seem to me that an announcement that the NRM have given X to Y because...................

Y plans to do ......... with it

    Is not an unreasonable request

Julian I can say with absolute honesty and certainty that I actually have a great love for all locos of the Southern Railway, pre-1924 or not! I just happen to believe that they'd receive much more attention and appreciation

And I think you Brighton fans ought to respond by CALMING DOWN and wait before you all go into panic mode. Like mentioned before, they could easily store 563 away in the back of their two road carriage shed, which while not intended for such a purpose, can be perfectly suitable till accomdation is sorted elsewhere. In fact has it not occured to the overly worrying lot on this forum that when they do announce their plans for 563, that will include plans for said undercover accommadation?

I'd say it's low blow to compare the Swanage Railway to those who treated 'Boxhil' and 'Newington' with little to no respect, they deserve better consideration then that, I believe they'll do a fine job caring for 563.

Please, there is no need to shout :)

No-one has alleged mistreatment of Boxhill in this thread.

Heh, well I apologise if my yelling caused upset, I'll be sure to refrain from doing so in the future. ;)

Though I'm pretty sure someone did suggest mistreatment of Boxhill, or it wouldn't have been mentioned otherwise.

In anycase, I've been hovering over this thread and it's panicking, scepticism for long enough, I'm off! At least till there's new developments on this topic anyway.

No upset, just amusement - you reminded me of Corporal Jones :)
No they didn't - Boxhill was mentioned in a different context. More fact checking is required -sorry I can't find a little flag for that :)

Actually, it was the present W11 (ex No 40 "Brighton") that had its cylinders damaged by having stones dropped down the blastpipe at Butlitz but I can see no real similarity with the present situation. However, I do recall that the Americans call gricers not "gricers" but "foamers" and there has been rather too much foaming going on about this issue.

I think you will find that even stage make-up could not hide the fact that the poor old girl's current paint job is now very tatty indeed. The cynic in me feels that she it is being given away because the NRM cannot afford the long overdue paint job, but I'm sure that it is probably not that simple. Hopefully her new owners will give her a new coat of paint sooner rather than later.

What is the coach, just out of interest? Is it a NRM vehicle?

I'm sure the NRM can still afford a few tins of paint. FFS.
