Sounds like a W.I.B.N. nightmare to me.

Try an early Easter Sunday WSR 'Then and now'. Minehead in 1874 and 2017. Many changes, but best to focus on the shape of North Hill and the goods shed....

I love to see these Victorian photos. North Hill, no trees, houses just fields! Is that the church in the background? Looks different. When I first started firing the old cattle dock was there for prepping & disposal , with no pit! Also who'd have thought there was a stream to the left.

Here are a further pair of 'WSR then and nows' from Minehead North Hill.

Quite difficult as the slopes are wooded now, which they weren't in the 1860's and 70's

The 1865 shot pre-dates the coming of the Railway in 1874, of course.

    But good pre-lunch exercise!

Nice to see the broad gauge track and loco at Minehead. I have always felt that Brunel was correct with his gauge and higher rail speeds would be more easily achieved than on the 'northern' narrow gauge. ;)

I was cleaning/firing there in 1976 when the great Harry Lee was about. I can't quite remember the cattle dock that you are referring to, would you mind pointing that out with reference to the photo. I can only assume that it was where the old volunteer coaches were stabled adjacent to the platform.

Its to the right of the goods shed in the 1874 photo, the wagon is standing on the stub where we used to prep etc.

A lot of building between 1865 - 75 it would seem.

I think these shots make plain how the town was created by the trade the Railway brought in, rather than the Railway being built to serve an existing need.

Could somebody provide a brief update on the road traffic to BL, please?
Is there much delay at the roundabout?
Does the No. 28 bus stop at the Station now, or in the village?

    Thanks.

The delays can be up to 15 minutes but usually less. No buses serve the station until the roundabout is completed and they go to the village instead.

    Not for vehicles!

For data on the roadworks go to www.roadworks.org . This gives the latest timings.

Today's WSR 'then and now' are both at Blue Anchor from 1962 and today.

The first looks West towards Minehead out through the gate leading from the down platform to the road. It's a minor detail but look at the spears on the top of the gate verticals.

The second is from inside the sanctum of the Booking Office, with the permission (and presence!) of today's booking clerk, Alan Scott.

    Enjoy!

    Robin
