Dead right on that. But even with a splash and dash at Appleby and a nippy run over Ais Gill, it won't be able to get into the loop at Hellifield until well after 6 pm because of the preceding Leeds train. But at least there was a breather provided at Carlisle for everyone. One can only hope that Network Rail is generous in the pathing it gives the train coming back as whilst we know that there are places where time can be grabbed back on the schedule, it does hinge on Control cooperating. I have to say that not for the first time Carlisle seems to have been unhelpful (Upperby issue) and any time grabbed back might have been more down to the speed of operation by WC rather than NR up there.

I think RTC and WCR did the very best they could have in the circumstances. We could have stuck it out but I thought, correctly as it turned out, that the chances of a clear run Carnforth to Carlisle were nil and for me that was to be the highlight of the day. Also I am getting too old for a potentially 24 hour day, having left home at 0430.

Mithered??? Definitions - Make a fuss or moan. Pester or irritate.

And that is the language that undermines customer service and shows just how some of those who operate and/or work on the steam charters view their paying customers. Sorry but the customer is King and if anyone finds customers so unacceptable when things go wrong is in the wrong business/job. Periodic announcements even if it is there still is no news at least engages with the paying customers concern.

I assume it's also timed for electric motive power from farington junction so will continue to lose time south.

Sadly for all its just been one of those days.

What a shame - why no Upperby curve approval then?

According to RTT the Class 47 spent the afternoon in Preston and moved to Farington Curve Jn at 1737.

The 47 is allowed 95 mph but the 86 only 90 so I suspect not much difference as on the morning journey. Please do not under rate the 47s

NR again of course and after WCR and RTC had conceived a good plan. Did NR have a good reason? If so let's hear it.

The 86/2 used to be plated for 100 as they had the better suspension, has this example been restricted?

Their prerogative I guess except when it leads to running that is so late it affects passengers. I remember when Tornado was on time at Carlisle but held up because a freight was sitting where the stock should have been and then they held Tornado to let a Leeds service out five minutes ahead of it. Inevitable late run over the S&C and missed path etc etc. Messing around at Crewe with change to the electric and nearly 1 am in Euston. Not even a 'sorry'. That was Carlisle Control.

Since I was referring to the communications between the TM and controller, and the latter being mithered by the former, I fail to see how this can be construed as a language that undermines customer service, since passengers were not involved in any way.

Have touched 102 with Les Ross and run around the high 90's for many miles with it. It is also far quicker to these speeds than a 47. West Coast have paired 47's previously when a substitute for the 86 is required.

+1 to that comment. A Class 47 is no slouch once it has wound up but a Class 86 is quicker in all departments. That's not to say it won't be a swift run back today on the CME if NR sorts out the path but it'll have to move some to get back before 2330. But given the start today, that is really quite a result.

Sounds like 10/10 for effort to try and salvage this railtour, full marks Rtc, West Coast and NR.

I have been 100 mph down the ECML behind a 47. The difference is acceleration, Andy Taylor of WCRC advised on here many years ago, that a 86 will reach 100 mph at Wembley after leaving Euston, while it will at Tring with a 47.
