Which BR steam shed contributed the most surviving locos?

How many did Croes Newydd contribute? Must be a fair few, weren't most of the preserved Standard Tanks withdrawn from there?

 

Which, as an aside, shows how preservation has seen so many engines end up a long way from the areas where they operated. I've taken pictures behind five of these and travelled behind three of them without going anywhere near the northern half of Wales for decades.

 

I looked up Annesley. No surprises that only one loco was preserved from there (since the shed closed well before the end of steam) but which loco it was certainly surprised me - 30925.

 

Birkenhead provided two (and a half ?) Crabs & two 9Fs

Not quite the question asked but Bath Green Park had an allocation of some 50 locos in the late 1950's and of these there are 5 survivors, namely 41241, 44422, 53808, 53809 and 73050 - I reckon a 10 per cent survival rate from a decade before the end of steam is not too bad.

You didn't miscount Martin. 3717 'City of Truro' was also withdrawn for preservation from Shrewsbury shed in March 1931. That makes it at least 16

Although I didn't go that far into the site before; the SLS data on that page seems to disagree with their main list so obviously there is some confusion, maybe it is wrong.
Not sure what 30925 was doing at Annesley anyway, though I think it ran a railtour over the GC at one point.

These shed allocations do seem to be less well recorded than you would imagine. For the loco loco I part-own (D3861/08694) there seem to be two conflicting stories for the first couple of years of its life and really what we need is some primary sources but I'm not sure where to look; does the NRM have this sort of material?

 

The deficiencies highlighted by the 'What happened to steam'/'what really happened to steam' saga demonstrate the limitations of the surviving records. There were more problems with the data beyond the confusion created by one fantasist. In the last years of steam on the western region they simply stopped bothering to record tender allocations. There were plenty to go round and they were all going to be scrapped anyway so who cared...

 

Make that 18 - what about "S15" 30828, currently being overhauled on the Mid Hants, which was a Salisbury engine for the whole of her working life?
