GER Claud Hamilton 4-4-0s allocated to Trafford Park, Manchester

    Question, I have read on the LNER locos info site that, I think, 9 of these were sent to the ex CLC shed at Trafford Park, Manchester just after nationalisation, by BR.

    I have never seen any photos of them working out of Manchester and was wondering how long they were allocated there. Any LNER experts got any information on what seemed to have been an odd allocation?

    Presumably they would have been maintained at Gorton works while they were in the Manchester area?

    Yes, indeed. 62532, 62535, 62536, 62568, 62587, 62588, 62599 and 62609 were all at Trafford Park. They were all transferred away in June 1952.
    I've got a few books on the CLC, I'll have to check for photos of them.

    I've found a couple of photos of 62535 in "Liverpool to Manchester The Second Century". One is the loco on Trafford Park shed and the other is on a passenger train at Glazebrook.
    The text states that they replaced the ex-GCR D9 4-4-0s.

    The book came yesterday from Amazon and theres some really interesting pictures in it, as well as the Clauds, there are two photos of GWR locos at Manchester Exchange, a Dukedog and a 43xx Mogul, and also, the first photo I have ever seen of a WD 2-8-0 on a passenger turn, a Manchester Victoria - Atherton local.

    The GWR had running powers as far as Manchester Exchange and I've seen photos of Bulldogs there. My 'Old Man' used to tell of 28xx working freight into the area just pre WW2. It was not unheard of for WD's to be rostered for holiday excursion trains to places like Blackpool when the Newton Heath loco foreman had nothing else left. A pal of mine who was a fireman at 26A reckons that with a WD on passenger you always lost time as, at over 40mph, the 'shuttling' got too bad - it was just a matter of keeping going.
