I'm not a volunteer there and have no access to ops notices, was just curious how a loco swap would be managed in the middle of the day with two passing trains.

    Easy.

    (1) Stop both trains at their respective inner homes.

    (2) detach locos and run through station to opposite train and recouple.

    (3) carry on as normal.

Can you explain how a move of such would have been possible under the old arrangement in a similar fashion? Given that the trains are on a timetable where they are due to pass at wn. neither would be able to get to the other end of the opposite platform without the section token being released to pass the section signals. With the timetable as it was, one train would have to be at wn before the other either left ba or ch. If they had swapped coaching stock, yes it could have been done. But in terms of this weeks move don't think that would have been possible.

Perfectly possible. But it would have required the old up (not the down) starting signal to be passed at danger - something we used to do every once in a while to shunt behind a departed train or when we had obtained 'blocking back'.

The same move be can also be done with one train in a platform and the other just beyond the home signal.

Is 'shaped' coaching stock a misprint for something?

    Regards

    Robin

Are there current WSR signal box diagrams available anywhere online to aid following the discussion?

    Not all.

It can be done with completely signalled moves if the up is in first and the up loco is in the down platform before the down train is brought up to the inner home.

It sounds strange to me, that you would allow a loco to pass the up starting signal at Danger when the section is occupied by a Down train. You can't block back (or release a token for shunting) if the section is occupied, and obviously shunting behind a departing train doesn't apply in this case.

I'm not expert on these things but it looks to me like the down train is no longer "in section" but is now within "station limits". It would perhaps be different if the down train was stood at the outer home (ie outside the up section signal) but with the elaborate signalling arrangements at Williton it is just a question of "shunting within station limits". It is not dissimilar to what we do at Levisham when we change locos between trains.

Remember that you no longer need to maintain your clearing point when the train in the single line section at a stand at your home signal. The clearing point has then done its job - providing an 'overrun' for the train coming towards you. This is no longer needed as the train has stopped at the home signal.

I hope you are reading this carefully - I will be asking (signalling exam) questions later......:)

Could you explain some of the symbols and letters on the diagram please?

I'm guessing that DD, DE, ED, EE, etc., identify individual track circuits but I don't understand AR & LR next to signals or symbols like [ (with a missing 'leg').
Also I can't see any FPLs - presumably something like electrical locking instead?
