Did anyone else notice that when the speed reached 97 mph on the northbound run, we were told it was a "post-60s record"?

It really wasn't that bad compared with a run down Black 5 I footplated on the Belfast Boat Express back in the day. Enough to loosen all your teeth. Tenders with a long fixed wheelbase are not very steady riding vehicles at the best of times.

Yes, some of the '5s' on that turn were a bit rough, but my bruises have long since vanished and teeth cemented back into place!
    Happy days. :)

Mine too, a run down Bulleid could be a bit rough too but wouldn't have missed it for anything.

Excuse me, but this beauty was trying to run away with things & equal its sisters record before it was reined in!

Oh, and it was 2013 when the NRM et al were celebrating a certain milestone. ;)

Yes, but it didn't reach 96 mph. That record held until Tornado's little jaunt, however unofficial it was.

Great to see Mr Hendy taking a personal interest in this. Just goes to show, NR are on side.

Thought that was a great show, Tornado looked very on form.

I thought the same, what impressed me was when he said he wanted a photo of Tornado's speedo at 100mph!

If we're going by speedometer readings, Number 9's read 100 on her dash down from Whiteball.

Be interesting to know what kit was used for the official speed measurements. A few handhelds out of windows could be seen in the film, but these would be single-frequency GPS, and not the best sky view out of a drop-light. I would hope they had some sort of L1-L2 RTK set-up going on. Real-time speed from a L1 only GPS isn't that accurate (generally reads lower than true speed due to integration over time)

That amused me. Imagine trying that on some railtours. "You will remain seated." :)

Excellent programme - hope it gets repeated on a national slot as it deserves to be.

Hi did any one notice in the BBC film on TV of 100 mph run that the loco was nice and steady but the tender was like a bucking bronco go side to side on the cab shot that`s with a four wheel tender i know the water level make a difference wonder what it would be like on a six wheeler tender at a 100 mph and plus how meany miles did tornado do at 100 mph to modern traction just a view. The camera was fitted to the loco, so it would have looked steady but could have been bouncing and swaying. If the camera was on the tender, it would look like just the loco moving. Unless you can see outside the loco (difficult at night!) you have no real point of reference.

This is a good point about night time but if the loco was going side the film would be going side to side as well I think this a one off, tornado will be the only loco to be aloud to do 100 mph. cannot imagine what it would be like on a white metal bearing loco. FISH7373 81C NFP

If you've ever stood inside a railway coach and watched the adjacent coach through the gangway, it looks as if it is going all over the place yet yours appears to be riding steadily. If you clamp a camera to a loco cab side and film the surroundings, it is the latter that appears to be moving all over the place, not the loco. It is a relative thing.
