Can you expand on that? Assuming you mean the "Master Mechanics" smokebox arrangements, the significance was the self-cleaning arrangements, which pulverise the larger bits of char until they are small enough to pass through the screens. Anecdotally the baffle plates and screens are slightly adverse to drafting and steaming ability, and of course complicate work on tubes and superheaters as there is a fair bit of dismantling required.

I should have made myself clearer! I meant the basic 'long' smokebox where the char and ashk doesn't accumulate around the ends of the lower tubes and inhibit free steaming.
I don't know whether it was due to aesthetics (the T9s weren't visually improved by their alterations) but British designers were curiously loath to innovate in this direction.

I would back Russell to "win" based on the ability of closely related S.L.R. 85 to steam and to run. The so-called "gentleman's light sporting locomotive"! However, her problem is, once again, adhesion.

Hopefully I may get up to the far north of my county to see her when she is running. Wet rails have been mentioned, however, I would be certain to travel on a pleasant day. :D

Now if there's one gala I'd love to see, it would be a "Battle of the Prairies" on the VoR, with the native engines going head to head with Russell and Lyd...and ideally Mountaineer and Felin Hen too, although I appreciate those two might be a little difficult at present! Just putting it out there :p

Not forgetting 'Prince' from the Ffestiniog paying another visit. She did that a few years ago and looked lovely. The VoR has so much potential.

It was Palmerston not Prince that visited the VoR in 2014.

Doesn't Palmerston pretty much qualify as honourary VofR No.4 anyway (for historic reasons)?

I know what John means, but still have to say Vale of Rheidol has been fulfilling its potential for years! But yes, it is getting even better and who know what goodies will come out of the box in the future - how about the Hong Kong Bagnall ?!!

When she was there Mountaineer struggled on the VoR with a full load. I can't remember how many carraiges she was pulling but on the first morning train she came to a halt a few times before Rhiwfron halt. Back at Aber, the BR crew decided to remove a carriage from the afternoon train to reduce the weight which seemed to work. From memory it was still a lovely trip!

You are quite right there. In many ways, I think the great appeal of the VoR is precisely that things do not very often change there...every time you go, you're guaranteed to have a loco and carriages which are authentic to the line, and all built before 1948. Not many heritage railways can do that on a regular basis!

Having said that though, I went for a ride behind Palmerston on her 2014 visit and thoroughly enjoyed it. My only regret was that I didn't manage to get a really good photo of her!

Irrelevant and boring chatter about VoR is clogging this thread up and is especially irritating as Lyn approaches completion.
