IIRC, CoT had clearance problems with those outside frame and weird external cranks and coupling-rods.
Could the 4-cylinder types be adapted to only use their inside cylinders? o_O:p

Converted 9Fs or newbuild WD 2-10-0 alikes.
Nord of France ran two cylinder 2-8-2 tanks with 1.6 meter wheels to 75 mph (french legal limit) many times a day.

A Krauss-Helmholtz or Zara truck up front will make tracking as good as any pacific.
A low and a high pressure cylinder inside frames take care of clearance

Existing locomotives will be allowed on Settle -Carisle where 16 station platforms edges

9F's are out the equation for mainline running on account of their flangless centre wheel. We have talked about this on another thread.

There are very good reasons why 9F and WD 2-10-0s had flangeless centre driving wheels.

They wouldn't go around sharp curves without damaging the wheels or the track or both, or probably would have derailed, with flanged centre drivers

Everyone seems to be overlooking the American "Duplex" model. With that, a nice 2-6-6-4 requiring no flangeless wheels would be perfectly..... hold on, what has any of this got to do with the King class?

Is the problem of the Kings and lesser brethern that they are difficult to shrink as fast as the loading gauge?

Remember that a Duplex has a rigid frame. To give clearance for the rear set of cylinders, the rigid wheelbase has to be longer than a similar locomotive with one set of drivers. Your 2-6-6-4 would have a coupled wheelbase close to or exceeding that of the Russian success story, the fabled 4-14-4.

Latest update in the new issue of Heritage Railway which arrived today says that the King will now move to the WSR for testing in late September or October. There is also still a gauging problem with the front end running board above the buffer beam.

This is turning out to be a bit of a Braunton situation. Is there any point in running it in before it needs a new boiler ticket? Hate to be so negative, but there's been so many false starts with 6023 it's beginning to rival 60103 and 46100 for comeback dates.

Most duplex locos were 4-4-4-4s though there were some 4-6-4-4s and 4-4-6-4s.

I am not shooting the messenger as no doubt you are quoting what the magazine is saying, but what the hell does that last sentence mean!

In terms of the front end above the running board/buffer beam, isn't that space occupied by a bloody great boiler?
