It's a shame really - Robert was much more attractive as what she really was than as a fake BR loco...

I understand that the owner can do what he likes with his property, but fake J94s only deceive the public. Robert in green is far more eyecatching and memorbale than a black engine with a number. It certainly wasto this 6 year old at Rainhill

Wholeheartedly agree. Owners prerogative etc but what a shame when compared with 'Whiston' too. Bold Colliery staff were massively proud of the locos to the extent they got in-house livery and well maintained. Fake BR black is a poor choice.

If I remember rightly Swordfish sister Andrew Barcley to one time NYMR based Salmon [their No2 from the early days] now based in Scotland I think/recall. Is also in the dreaded fake British Railways livery of a former South Wales 0-6-0 of similar design that had ended it's days in B.R. days.

Whiston is now the only ex-Bold loco still in NCB N.W. area livery as Joseph has gone back into WD livery as Sapper - at least that's not a pseudo BR livery.

I would like to offer my congratulations to Roger and the guys at Loughborough. If he wanted to paint it purple it would be fine with me. It least it doesn't have a tender.

You pay the bills you get to call the shots.
If the owners are looking at hires to a passenger line then a "BR livery" may mean a bit more to some of the passengers. If it was a Foxfield or Tanfield loco then maybe it would not look right.
Well done for getting another loco back in service.

Owners prerogative and absolute respect for returning the loco to steam.
On the wider point of liveries generally I am personally dubious that a plain black livery is more appealing or memorable to "the passengers" to whom you refer than a fully lined and named NCB green would be. BR livery might make it fit better on heritage lines with a period setting though.

Nobody other than the owner liked lms livery on 12322 so you probably have a very valid point...

For what it's worth I told Roger more than once over the years that in my view he ought to paint it in khaki livery - it's one of very few ex-army examples which actually carried it. But he was always adamant it would be in BR black to fit in with the railway it's on. Anyway it's only paint. Maybe I should worry about painting my own stuff instead. :)

I like each of the liveries and they all have the virtue of being authentic for the loco.
My point was it seems dubious the choosing a fake black over a colourful legitimate one makes it more appealing unless it is because the GC will not use it unless it carries a a railway company livery. Was it not a GC director that said the public prefer colour? They were also happy to use a red 8F which is hardly authentic but was pseudo BR.
Again, respect to the owner to do as he pleases and terrific to see the investment of all sorts come to fruition. It is only paint, I accept.

The conclusion I come to from that is that it ought to be in lined BR green. :)

I can't recall a Austerity in that livery complete with crests etc - of course unless someone knows better?

As others have said it is the owners' prerogative to paint their locos any colour they choose. It is also right that anyone in the crowd should be permitted to mock the Emperor's New Clothes.

It was not unknown for NCB locos (diesel and steam) to run on the national network (to visit a depot for tyre turning etc), I even saw one in the 80s on the BR network. Have a couple of photos somewhere.

Quite so and some industrial locos had brass plates affixed to denote registration with the "Railway Executive" IIRC as authority to be taken onto BR tracks where necessary.
The NE station pilot livery carried by J72 69023 would be an interesting variant for an Austerity pretending to be a J94 rather than plain black.

Actually a different Austerity has masqueraded as 68067 in the past and it was green. I know this because I found photos online.
