Or indeed other Stroudley D tanks that ended up on the LMS during World War II - at one point, 2322 worked the Moffat - Beattock branch; 2605 was the Ayr station pilot; 2627 on the Beith branch; 2358 at Dingwall; 2699 at Inverness or Wick; 2240 and 2286 at Liverpool. Supposedly 2605 was used as a pilot in front of Black 5s on heavy expresses. All quite a long way from home! I wonder if there is a surreptitious wartime photo of a D tank and a Duchess in the same shot at Beattock? That would be in the "prototype for everything" class!

The photo that you posted has one on the right hand tank! Maybe one went "walkies" at some point?

 

If you can find a copy of Trains Illustrated No 53 Jan to March 1985 there is a good article on the railway with photos of AB 1026/04 which this engine took over from and the coaches as well.

 

Full marks for observation! It shows that I should have looked at my own photo more closely rather than going off what someone else had written! Sorry about that - I'll edit my earlier post.

Only just realised - the big air reservoir that would have been cross-mounted underneath the rear frames has been removed on the uploaded pictures, though the pump remains.

 

Ive never heard about the USA tank at Bank Hall. I didnt know that those ever left the Southern. In similar vein, ex L & Y pugs at Swansea.

 

One of the D's worked the Wick & Lybster line for a time during the war until its closure in 1944. As far from Southern metals as it was possible to get without leaving Britain.

 

The LMS, briefly, had an ex LBSCR Stroudley 0-6-0. One was sold to the Stratford on Avon and Midland Junction Railway before the grouping by the LBSCR, and it was taken over by the LMS in 1923. It was allocated an LMS number but I don't know if it ever carried it or not.

Also, the GWR got two Terriers, via the Weston Clevedon & Portishead Railway, which they took over in 1940, they became GWR 5 and 6

 

Smith notes that 2605 piloted a Jubilee on one occasion, from Ayr to Glenwhilly. He says 2284 was also at Ayr.

 

Wonder if the D1 tanks were better pilots than 2Ps?

 

However good they may have been, it must have been a pretty exciting ride. Going back to the fact that I'm supposed to be making a model of the Whittingham Hospital version, what's currently bothering me following Ray's uloaded picture (reproduced here) is that it looks a bit like the smokebox front and door look like they're green like the rest of the loco with just the hinges and handles in black - a bit like the currently topical "Ivor The Engine". I hope I'm wrong - somehow I suspect they'll be black on my version......

 

Was this a SR example or an Army Surplus sale? More details please

Interesting, I guess it could be an error or maybe it was being evaluated for a local role...Fleetwood sounds like it might have dock lines, certainly Liverpol would

 

The current Steam Beano (p70) also gives it as 30066 at Bank Hall in 1955 (and 30061 @ Kentish Town) but says that they were "returned in a few months". The article also describes 30061 as being at Cricklewood at some time in 1956 returning to the SR 1/57. AFAIK any remaining in U.S. Army ownership would be long gone by 1955. Of course Austin at Longbridge had an army surplus one as did Longmoor.
