The only things getting thicker are the arterial walls of those involved as they age. Apart from those schemes based around an existing boiler (or the G5), I see little prospect of any early completion.

I think what some people have been trying to say is that you can't do it on enthusiasm alone (although it helps).

There needs to be strategic management decisions to enable you to complete it. Otherwise it will and you longer to complete, if you ever complete it, and may cost more money. One of the key aspects of that management is to harness that enthusiasm efficiently.

When someone (like me, or Paul) asks a straightforward question, and it's kicked away, that's not a good sign. A competent manager should be able to answer the basic questions, i.e. who, where, when and how much? If they can't answer these questions, it's important to highlight to the group members why these questions are important and the natural consequences of being unable to answer them.

You don't want to be another Clan group. Don't make their mistakes.

All projects, preservation or commercial based, have problems. Every loco build or restoration has had issues, some more public than others.
Mistakes have been made and rectified and we have a policy of openness which our supporters appreciate. Apart from where third parties are concerned we will answer questions and myself and others from the project have answered many on NatPres and in our weekly updates already.
The key thing to remember is that mistakes will be made, learn from them and move on. All new builds take something from the A1 Trust experience building Tornado, hopefully others will learn from the Clan Project, both the mistakes made in the past and the way in which the project is now run.

It depends what you mean by "early". As usual, I respect but disagree with your viewpoint. I see much prospect of completion but some projects will doubtless be completed before others. As for 77021, as the project has only just been floated (and already we have 9 pages of comment-mainly on new builds in general rather than on 77021 specifically) but those involved have already made it clear that they intend to consult and learn from those already constructing new locos.

Many thanks for your support too....

The construction is already under way with the smoke box door. This will then enable us to take it to shows and events to help promote the build.

Pin is made and done for considerably less than was first thought. All down to contacts in other groups.

A small start but a good one, and shows the importance of making contacts with other loco groups.

Not to consult would be a very bad thing. We have had lots of good advice so far from fellow members of the BRSLOG, and none of it was bad.

And to learn from others where they went wrong or possibly done things differently is always a good thing.

Plus there is nothing like asking a stupid question, it could end up saving a huge costly mistake.

And to have it made was around £150. As you say contact with other groups is key to this build, we may start off slow but we want to make sure things are correctly done first.

It appears to have all gone quiet on the social media regarding this project for quite a while. That doesn't mean it has "died" of course but it would be interesting if anyone has any recent updates on 77021.

The UK will soon have an example of every BR standard steam locomotive design, with the exception of this one. It wouldn't just be "nice" if it were to be completed; it would enable a complete historical line up of BR standard types to be displayed and the Class 3 would be ideal for many heritage lines, albeit not perhaps the most attractive of locos!

Oh, OK, a modified 9F then, I didn't know the technical term, thanks. So none of these survived then? Just as well!
Any more updates on the 3MT Class 77XXX?

I read (though can't remember where) they were classified as 8Fs after rebuilding without the Crosti and reverting to 'traditional' design?

The boiler was smaller than a standard 9Fs to allow space below for the Crosti pre-heater. When the Crosti drum was removed (which I think it was, rather than merely blanked off), the smaller boiler was retained. The lower steam raising capacity meant that they were generally given the same loads as an 8F, but I am think it still said 9F on the cab sides.

An option for an existing 9f with a 'write off' boiler then

An option to make it worse?! I think in the event that happened you would look to build a new normal 9f boiler.
The instances of preserved loco boilers being written off in their entirety have been few.

In that event I would have a new boiler made to a modified design, slightly longer with a full depth firebox and ashpan and make the Chassis a 2-8-2 , but I m a Phillistine.
Chances are it would only be the firebox that would be a write off in any case

I recall that at one point there were thoughts of using the hulk of 76077, which is at the G/WR, I think, as the starting point for a 77xxx, different spokes on the driving wheels notwithstanding. The idea was to use a GW Prairie boiler with the rolling chassis? However, I believe that it will now be restored in its own right as 76077.
