The first Dorset Coast Express of 2017 is tomorrow, with 60009 up front. Usual timings...

Do RTC do any sort of pay on the day from, say, Southampton to Weymouth? As the weather looks rather poor on the outward, I'd be tempted to have a bit of a ride, 13 years since I last had a trip behind her!

I have heard that people have negotiated a part fare on the day with the train manager.

Fantastic, thanks! If I get there in time, I'll see if I can get a part fare.

Saw 60009 rolling through Battersea Loop as I passed overhead on my way to work around 08:50 this morning so it's on the way.

You'll hopefully be able to enjoy a the sound of a hard-working A4 on the climb from Brockenhurst to Sway instead of the usual restraint on this section. No fear of setting the New Forest on fire today!

Well it certainly wasn't setting Fleet on fire! As usual it was following a stopper and running on yellows / double yellows although the driver did open up a bit as he went through the station. Pictures, taken in the pouring rain, now on Flickr and can be seen in this album:

Hope they're of interest despite the conditions. Looking forward to seeing other people's efforts.

Hopefully, you'll be right. I'm sitting in Standard towards the back and the diesel has pushed on all starts.

The DCE is a great day out, even in the rain and despite the Staines diversion and the diesel tow back to Southampton it has a lot to commend it. What is sad is that there just doesn't seem to be the paths available to send the diesel down LE and then let it come back ML from Soton, LE, while the train goes via Laverstock. That way the bit that is steam hauled really is steam hauled. Have been on its earlier versions with an extra steam loco to handle the Weymouth bit but operationally, I believe that is not now possible...and I'm not certain that there are two steam locos available anyway at present.

The departure from Woking on @mrKnowwun 's clip is the other reason. The speed at MP31 is an irrelevance when that is going on at the back.

Two shots of 60009 in a very wet Dorset , first just outside Moreton with class 47 doing a lot of shoving and the second at Moreton station . The first shot very short because a gentleman who needed to announce very loudly that there was a diesel on the back .

Someone told me there was no water tanker at Winchfield, looking at RTT looks like it had to make it all the way to Beaulieu Road [BEU] without a fill.

Is it not possible to switch 47 off at Victoria and only switch it on at Weymouth? A4 is a 8P afterally! !

Looking at your video, all they needed to do was open the filler cap on the tender and the rain would have kept her topped up.

I think that 100% steam on the Bournemouth line may require giving up on Weymouth and waiting for the Swanage Railway to install its big turntable. Not quite up to the drama of Upwey Bank, but still something I would find more attractive than the current incarnation of the DCE.

60009 passing Romsey this evening. Although there is never much noise through Romsey due to the speed on the approach, UOSA sounded superb and the diesel on the back was just idling even when the acceleration away from the station commenced.[IMG]

Hi Shaggy, I was 5 minutes up the line from you! No. 9 coasted through Dunbridge due to TSR and then really opened up just after station. 3 cylinder roar could be heard for several minutes as she blasted off towards Salisbury. Wonderful...! 60009-7 Dunbridge 26072017.jpg
