Pity it's now raining so not the best day to visit Scarborough. Stopped at Malton and the driver advised to proceed with caution for a mile or two, reports of trespassers....

Mother Hubbards Chip Shop is a good enough reason to visit Scarborough at any time @RalphW

It's a 'you couldn't make it up', got to York, had all the extra shunting, splitting the 37s and putting one on the back, arrived in Scarborough more extra shunts then to be informed that the steam ban had been lifted before we had left Carnforth....

Maybe not the right thread to indulge in ripping yarns about the halcyon last days of steam over the S&C with the "Waverley"; but as you say, its undeniably a bit of fun. So I thought I would browse a selection of northbound runs for which data is held within the RPS archives - eleven in total, between June 1960 and May 1961.

Without running the risk of infringing any copyright on the actual performance data/ tables, I think it can be recorded that
    1. Loads were typically 8/ 283/ 300-305 gross (including a 12 wheel restaurant car - RK? - M9M) or 9/ 320/ 335-340 gross
    2. A wide variety of motive power was recorded - 4 x Jubilee/ 2 x Scot (both 46145)/ 1 x Brit/ 2 x A3/ 2 x Black Five (one double-headed)
    3. Maximum speeds did indeed typically range up to 80 mph
    4. 8 of the 11 HFD-APP runs were accomplished in marginally or measurably less than the 57 minute schedule referred to, with an absolutely storming run by A3 60080 Dick Turpin in a shade over 49 minutes
    5. 33 minutes for the APP-CAR section was very representative of Load 8/ Load 9 performance with all locomotive types, with once again the aforesaid A3 achieving a start-stop time of just under 29 minutes!

By 1962, it was all over for steam on the Waverley, as Class 45's assumed total command of all principal daytime and overnight services on the S & C.

Hope this glimpse of the way things were adds to the fun of your retrospective comparisons!!

I had already booked on the 17th so the 40 being announced was an unexpected bonus

Meanwhile a few miles away in sunny Scarborough a few passengers enjoy the sun and get a closer look at Galatea.
