That was taken at 4.20, 55 minutes before departure, but on the return we ran into the rain on the approach to York, clearing almost as soon as the guard had detached Galatea and attached the 47. It should be noted that the 37, running as rear gunner, accompanied us to Scarborough for 'operational' reasons.

My first visit to Scarborough since I travelled there behind 4472 on the day before Charles and Di got married. After we got a thorough soaking all morning on the NYMR (Repton came out), the sun played hide and seek in a blustery wind at Scarborough all afternoon. Fortunately the clouds parted while Galatea left this afternoon. IMG_0203-Nat-PresWeb.jpg

Galatea on top form yesterday, a brisk and noisy run to Scarborough, a bit more restrained on the return as it's pointless getting back to York early only to sit waiting for a platform.

In York today so strolled along to the station to watch Galatea depart. Walked to the end of platform 4, passed the arc of at least six photographers so I was not in the way.

Galatea sets off and at the last minute a not so nice person plonks himself right in front of everyone's shot and proceeds to video the departure inspite of the pleas from all those who's shot he was ruining.

Angry photographer  then stand right in front of him and says you spoiled my shot so I'll make sure I've spoiled yours. A bit of pushing and shoving and I nearly missed Galatea distracted by the platform display.

Yobs? teenagers? no both pensioners :Rage: and people wonder why some of today's youth behave badly.

This was near Huttons Ambro, about 12.15 today. No hooligan pensioners to obscure my view!

After a cloudy morning on the moors I went to Sherburn to catch Galatea on the way east. The cloud was clearing, but still hanging on. All that changed just before the train arrived and I got it in brilliant sunshine. I got lucky.

I went to a place near Malton in brilliant sunshine for the return in the afternoon and the light was perfect when I got there, but an hour or so before Galatea was due a heavy bank of cloud with some distant heavy showers rolled in and the day went dark. I thought that was it and that I'd used up all my luck in the morning. With half an hour to go I noticed that it was a bit brighter to the west, so I decamped and headed there, gaining time on the way. Twenty minutes to go, 17.40, I pulled up with a blanket of cloud still overhead, but clear sky to the west, so at least the light was a (little) bit better.

Ten minutes before Galatea arrived the cloud cleared the sun. Lovely light and the dark cloud behind the train were just the ticket.

Sometimes you get lucky, sometimes you make your own luck and sometimes you get the perfect blend of the two. :)
