I can't be bothered to reply Paul - doing your usual thing of selective quotations and also ignoring the points being made.

Honestly, if the whole of railway preservation was like you, we'd be in trouble as a movement.

Rather grateful for the big chufferitis of the preservation movement - it adds colour, flavour and sound to the scene. Long may it continue (with or without your rather dubious blessing!)

DLM of Winterthur has made some calculations on a 50 tons fireless locomotive in shunting work and estimate 4000 ton kilometre on one charge.
Shunting is acceleration and braking.Herritage running much less so.8000 ton kilometre?
When we apply my patents for superheating the steam with coal to get the rigth smell we maybe land on 16000tkm.SVR is 22km long so train mass can be around 750 tons on one charge

To your original rather long spiel. Other members have made similar posts you've ignored. C'est la vie. Enjoy the rest of your weekend. I will return to my big chufferitis modelling...

What happened to gradients in that calculation?

Or indeed, the fact that many of us are interested in preserving things?

I don't think there's a case for mainline machines after Tornado. I wonder about the economics of their next creation. Your comments about MNs are valid. I wonder will any more ever steam?

Gradients are not so important but altitude change from start to stop.If You know the altitude at the endstations please let me know and I will calculate the energy demand to cover that..
I do not really understand the passion for preserving obsolete technology, but am thankfull that some have it.
My favourite UK WD 2-10-0 will be out of servise for long, long time and find it a shame.
It was the first and best looking UK locomotive I saw 1n 1975.
A new boiler will be very expensive,a pressure vessel looking like a boiler much less so.

Not to mention the fact of several stops, starts and slowings/accelerations, need to create a vacuum for the brakes, need to steam heat the coaches at times etc etc

If the whole of railway preservation was like Paul, nothing would ever have been built.

Yes Paul, we know you have and for which railway. Pity they only run toy trains. Small chufferitis.

Meow. Nothing WIBN about those two railways then? Nothing 'out of place'?

All enthusiast run trains are toy trains. Only moderately sized ones are sensible toy trains.

You did not expect to be put on the spot evidently. The answer to your question is that there is no railway with nothing out of place. Now an answer to my question please.

Evidently substantial numbers of people disagree with you, which they are demonstrating by supporting the construction of more new locos for the main line: at least the Patriot and the P2 and I hope and expect some of the others. Edit: I left out the Clan.

The economics of all the new builds depend on large amounts of money being donated, but I don't think anyone is suggesting otherwise.
