Ficticious Engines / Liveries

Having had a request on the BIL thread to put up information on a P2 conversion I have done, I'm starting a thread here for those of us that have modelled engines that are either fictitious in design, or had changes to a design that was already made. Some of these might have been seen elsewhere, but others are free to contribute.

Here is the information for my P2 60603 Eleventh Earl of Mar:

The idea was that with two groups working on the P2 engine, Black Hat Ltd, formed a new company buying the rights to the name of the North Eastern Railway. Here, engines owned would be put into one company and hired to lines that were wanting engines. The P2, being built was a replica of 2001 as first built, but with changes to the tender giving her a corridor connection, making access to the support coach easier. Air brakes were fitted with a Westinghouse pump giving greater control on the mainline but also making the engine more versatile. Somewhat controversially it was out shopped as 60603 wearing BR Late Crest Green, in the number sequence vacant in the Eastern region numbering scheme (between A2 and W1) - with the first two announced new build engines given the first two spaces in the sequence. 60603 was given the name Eleventh Earl of Mar to keep its Scottish theme and links with its forbearers. Equipped with TPWS, OTMR, it was soon mainline working heavy tours in the North East and west largely with WCRC, replacing the diesel traction that brought tours up from the south. Quickly it soon gained a nickname as 'the other Earl', in reference to 5043, Earl of Mount Edgcumbe. Main runs ran off Hellifield to Carlisle, or over into Edinburgh via Beattock, with some tours on the ECML from York to Newcastle, Edinburgh, Carlisle, Scarborough.

That's how the engine got its name. I needed to think of a name, something linked to Scotland. Mons Meg, Hollyrood, Lord of the Isles, Highland Chieftain, etc, were all taken or linked to the railway already. So with the music playing through random, on came Eleventh Earl of Mar. Name picked! Got a company to make accurate nameplates and then done!

Theres an outside chance of a sister engine being done in BR Express Blue / NER Darlington Green...

A better name than Harold The Barrel, I guess, although I suspect such a 'real' P2 nameplate would have had it as '11th 'rather than 'Eleventh'.

I've been thinking of repainting Hornby's (ahem) 'big Cock' in BR green or express blue myself, although keeping its original name and A2/2 guise number. Am rubbish at painting locos, though.

I have a B17 and a couple of West Countries with fictional names and numbers.

 

Nice. The Reason for Eleventh Earl of Mar having the name the way it does, comes from where it shares its name, being a Genesis record. So the name is carried that way in case people recognise the record, or think the engine is legitimate.

I prefer to let people think a bit and join the dots themselves, rather than handing everything to them on an instantly-digestible plate. Let the buggers wonder...
