Looks like another loco has been "disposed" of by the NRM - ownership of GWR 2818 transferred to STEAM at Swindon.

    http://nrm.org.uk/aboutus/pressoffice/pressreleases/2017/august/2818-swindon

Am a bit puzzled by the choice of loco for this one, as I don't remember the NRM being full of heavy freight engines?

I fail to understand why the NRM considers it better to transfer ownership rather than a simple loan arrangement.

    Completelyagree.

I have never seen any reasonable, logical argument that supports the transfer of ownership. Can anyone explain how a transfer of ownership offers any advantages over a properly-worded long term loan? The only effect I can see is a reduction of the value of assets on the balance sheet but surely the NRM is not concerned with this.

There again, I haven'tgot letters after my name, so how could I know...

Does the rest of the collection at STEAM still belong to the NRM?

The press release implies so, which raises an obvious question - what is different about 2818?

I suppose the NRM could recall the Super D, the O4 or the Q7 to 'tell the story' of heavy goods locomotives (at least one member of this forum would no doubt recommend the last of those because it 'looks effective'!) BUT......

.....what you have to remember is that heavy goods locomotives are big, take up a lot of space and displaying one seriously limits available space for interpretation panels, soft play areas, coffee shops and evenings dinner functions...............:D:eek:

    I have a taxi booked..................

What is the point of it being 'The National Railway Museum' if it keeps giving away the family silver?

Must have deemed the previous transfer of 50033 a success then. You couldn't make it up.

I was under the impression it belonged to the city of Bristol but I guess they too must have given it away.

    The must be some logic.

its the beginning of the re working of the NRM into a revenue earning platform, , Now Steam isnt exactly bursting for space, something has to move out to make room, it can only be 6000, or 7821, i would imagine that 7821 could very well be back on its way to the WSR sooner than expected.

As a Bristolian, I too believed it was owned by the Council and went on long term loan to the NRM after the proposed transport museum in Wine Street was cancelled late 60s / early 70s. One each of Fox-Walker, Avonside and Peckett 0-6-0 STs were also earmarked for that project.

As an observation there are plenty of Churchward and Collett Variants in Preservation and in operation . It does rather reduce the GWR content in the NRM though with 3440, 4003 currently remaining

Swindon is a good place for it and at least the NRM can reclaim should anything happen to Steam . Just hope with all the development the loco can be got in an out . The risk and especially looking at Snibston is how much will a council continue to support such a museum

My reservation about the transformation and especially looking towards the development at Leicester is that the content at York and Shildon reduces as does some of the incentive to go . What was always special was the breadth of locomotives that could be viewed . For the public Steam is still key and no offence to those whose interest is more in modern traction , more modern/contempory exhibits don't have the same attraction. Perhaps some of the outstationed exhibits will return or even be displayed for the first time

other end of the spectrum to 563...lots of 28xx preserved and just one 563.... odd isn't it. The NRM is light on freight locos anyway, and GWR locos in particular not to mention tank locos. Where's 9400? should be a pannier at York by rights.

Am I the only one who is totally uninspired by the NRM? The last time I went there it was just a B&Q warehouse stuffed with locomotives and rolling stock, no attempt to create any railway atmosphere. Perhaps the big mistake was acquiring a locomotive depot and not retaining the structure as it was to give some sort of railway feel about the place. I've never been to Shildon but the photographs I've seen of the Greeley lineup there is completely ruined by the modern outline building behind. The more locos released to proper railways the better as far as I'm concerned, great shame that the Q1 was recalled from the Bluebell where it looked right.

Well, I think that leaves the NRM with no Churchward standard 2cylinder locomotives, as well as without the first modern freight class. Presumably one of the 4 cylinder 4-6-0s will be on the list soon.

I went on a cab it weekend. The volunteer in the cab of the loco knew feck all, bumbled his way through an explanation of the controls till I took over. Since when does a steam locomotive have an accelerator??

The press release says .... "The disposal completes a review of the National Collection by the National Railway Museum ....". This implies that 2818 is the last disposal for now. This would surprise me because there seem to be a number of candidates for deaccessioning based on duplication. 2 x GNR Atlantics, for example. And 2 x NER 2-4-0s.

I'm happy that 2818 has gone to Swindon ... a suitable home for it. And there are others preserved elsewhere. I don't particularly want to see the National Collection thinned out, but rather a 28xx, of which there are a few, than the previous two which are unique.
