£250k on a serious lottery bid for a new workshop for rebuilding abandoned ex GW coaches including machinery, supervision & sponsorship of apprentices. The other £750k to provide at least some match funding for a lottery award. Location? - Williton.

Is the correct answer..... use £1 million to get you to £2 million and it becomes even more of a game-changer.

I think a storage facility / museum for freight vehicles on the SVR, Bluebell or Mid Hants would probably be top of my list and, with some match funding, might be achievable. Those railways seem to my untrained eye to have glorious goods rakes but they need protecting and they need displaying outside of the irregular use they might get on charters and at galas.

I am very interested to see how many of the replies so far concern Carriages and Wagons. Perhaps a sign that a lot of the more realistic "steam dreams" are now fulfilled and attention is turning to the "wider scene" which of course involves the trains the engines are pulling!

Well once fundraising commences I will certainly contribute, though sadly I don't have a spare million!

In all seriousness though this would seem, with the diesel shed built and Bridgnorth on the way, to be the only glaring omission currently at the railway. I wish them every success.

I will add another three options to that. Complete a 6 coach rake of Restriction 3 Maunsell coaches at the Bluebell, including the unique restaurant car. Alternatively, its about time the 4 Barnhams at Ruddington got some investment and the Dreadnought at Didcot would also be good contender.

I agree I would like to see a lot more invested in the coaches and covered space for them. Too many railway have a fine collection of historic locos pulling a dull collection of shabby Mark 1s and any vintage coaches they have just rusting away.

I once had a pet idea of reinstating Garsdale water troughs; I've no idea how much it would cost.

These days you get a lot less for your million. But I would buy the station house at Llyclys and put back the track to connect with the rest of the Cambrian line. With what is left I would erect a shed /workshop to restore a small loco in the garden of the station house to give me a retirement project.

M&GN no 50 with or without the original boiler. People keep saying they like Johnson 4-4-0s so £1m seed money to get it realistic for public subscription, or
there are (I think) 3 ordinary GER bogie coaches extant , of which GER BTK 295 looks most likely to run again without my help. Offer to pay for all 3 to be repaired on condition they have the opportunity to be seen together regularly (mind 2 are brakes so even that is not ideal), or
Contribute to runton triangle connections reinstatement so longer trains can go to the NNR, or
Bridge strengthening on the Bittern Line so big locos can come in again for galas, or
Contribute to reinstatment of runaround and watering facilities at Yarmouth or Lowestoft to make the Wherry lines ideal for a Plandampf

I'm sure some or all of these are unrealistic but, then I didn't get that email this morning either

Ask for bids from any heritage railway for amounts between £1000 and £100,000 to spend on training volunteers, paid staff or apprentices particularly in engineering skills.
