During a visit to Buckfastleigh last week I saw a Bulleid driving wheelset. (I saw nothing else of Bulleid origin.) Please can anybody say what loco it belongs to? TIA Andrew N

Yes, but it displays several untypical features (I don't want to resurrect this discussion), eg: Thermic syphon, outside admission, LeMaitre blastpipe.

A thermic syphon is just an addition to the usual complement of parts, arguably worth displaying and anyway not changing anything else.
Outside admission is a design detail that even many of us on here would be barely aware of. It affects the details of the valve gear but not the general principles.
LeMaitre blastpipe is one of a number of designs that were intended to be, and generally were, superior to a single conventional blastpipe where the available height is restricted. The basic principle of the exhaust steam generating draught for the fire is the same with all of them. While the dimensions may not be optimal, it evidently did the business and continues to do so on most of the Bulleids that are still/back in service.

2017 could be called the year of the Bulleids, so far it has seen 2 merchant navy's back on the mainline, both hauling their first revenue earning tours since returning to main line action,, it has seen the return of the Bourmouth Belle, seen 35018 return after many years, so heres looking forward to 2018, and hopefully 35028 setting the standard, to 35018 setling down and flying the flag up north, showing what a merchant does to northern hills, to 257 sqn entering traffic at Swanage,

Been a good year for quite a few Merchants with 35006 putting in great performances at the MHR and GWSR. 35005 getting back on her wheels and 35011 making steady progress.

Is Ian Riley actually working on it? i thought it was no longer part of his plans as he has the fives, a jinty thats due for overhaul, and contract work on 60009 and of course maintenance contract for 60103.

Ian Riley Jinty is currently being overhauled and it won't be too long to it is running. Plus it will be painted in BR lined black.

Excellent page. One minor request: next time you touch it, could you put in a sentence about his sterling work as AOIC at Malta, towards the end of the blitz/siege there? Not in the same league as his BoB role, of course, but...

(For those who aren't familiar with the Malta WWII story, it's one of the great sieges, and the island richly deserved the George Cross it was awarded by George VI - his idea, BTW - "to bear witness to a heroism and devotion that will long be famous in history". Ironically, it was Malta's second great siege; another one we all owe them for.)

Thanks for the suggestion Noel. I shall try to include something when I have a few minutes. FYI, our collection of SKP (the man) photos includes a selection from his time in Malta and come from a not widely published collection: https://photos.google.com/share/AF1...?key=VUxfZDFLZHh3M2NTUHZrY3hLdVIyZU9vMlAxUUdB

I see from the latest Steam Beano that the ELR has agreed to buy 34092 City Of Wells.

So no hope of seeing it on the main line again, which is sad. Still, the East Lancs is near the top of my list of preserved lines I haven't visited but would like to. Now it looks like 34092 is going to be based there long term, I can't think of a better reason for a visit to Bury.

There were strong and well-founded rumours a while ago that Jeremy Hosking wanted to buy a "flat top." It now looks like his only opportunity, unless the current owner of Tangmere wishes to sell, is to make an offer for what's left of 34073 - unless, of course, the NRM does some more decommissioning and offers him 34051. :)
