Maybe DB don't sign the little NW route or traction not guaged?

Maybe. During the Eden Brows blockade DB engineering trains from Carlisle to Settle regularly ran via Preston and Blackburn. This avoided reversals at Carnforth and again at Hellifield. But the cement train from Avonmouth to Clitheroe could run direct via Carnforth and Hellifield without reversal. Assuming there is no engineering work on that line. AN

Which is possibly the same reason why the railtour can't go that route as well on the way back.

Well if we are destined for a return via Shap then I expect it will be that rubbish path around 1600 involving being looped at Eden Valley almost as soon as we start. Let's hope that we are not encouraged to spin out time at Carlisle any longer than is necessary.

I wouldn't have thought the Little North Western would be much use in any case as it would require a reversal.

Has the connection with the Barrow line been reinstated yet? There was talk of freight coming off the coast route eastwards.

I haven't heard anything on that score. Probably Carnforth's answer to the Todmorden curve (and just as costly)! It would certainly save a fair bit of faff if it was in place.

That's what everyone who is travelling has been told. So only a breakfast for those in dining.

    Here's the thing about Saturday.

It's not just about Tornado; it's about the journey and the route as that's the way it has been billed. With all due respect to Carlisle, this city is a means to an end not a destination in itself and if it's wet, there are not too many other places where I would rather not be. For many, the day will be all about the scenery, whatever the weather. Without the Settle and Carlisle, which now seems highly unlikely, the whole package loses quite a lot of appeal. I wouldn't want to be the A1ST at this point as the vast majority of passengers will be aware of the inconvenience of late timings but blissfully unaware of the S&C issue that will actually have a far greater impact and about which there has been silence.

As UKRT is merely acting as agents for the A1ST, they have no obligation to do any more than just share information about bookings and timings. This is what they are doing. If, and when the final route is confirmed, that's the point at which the feedback might start to get a little bit more edgy, especially as time ticks on. Add to that the potential for a silly o'clock finish (which tbh, should be completely unnecessary if we return via Shap, but NR may not be helpful on that one) and the day could become one that was best cancelled earlier this week.

Maybe, a rabbit is being pulled out of the hat on this one. Either way it's all a bit tricky for everyone so good luck to all!

If you are in Standard, which I am, then the early start means that anyone staying overnight on Friday, which I am, misses out on a hotel breakfast. What we might get on the train from the buffet is hardly any substitute and given the day in store, low blood sugar levels early on makes for a grumpy timer!

Sorry, none of that was clear in the original post - a bit like some of the detail for the day actually. ;)

I often wonder why some of the tour companies offer to provide a booking service for others. They run the risk of brand damage for little or no return and this is a prime instance of where their reputation could get damaged. Whilst I am sure this tour will have a higher enthusiast complement than most these days those who were looking for a scenic day out behind steam may not understand all the issues that are common knowledge to those on here around issues on late timings, routings gauging etc.
A Trip Advisor score of 84% rating you excellent or good would be something I would want to protect if I were UK Railtours.

No. There is no southbound freight on the coast apart from nuclear traffic. There is a bit at the northern end towards Carlisle.

I cannot recall when I last saw a DB Cargo train between Carnforth and Settle Junc so I suspect, like you, that they do not sign the route.

Just let Al know your coach and seat number and you can keep a piece of toast and marmalade for him.
